Syria: Turkish-backed Islamists attack US-backed militants

Al Masdar News reports:

Two years ago, U.S. Senator John McCain illegally entered Syria to meet with the Islamist rebel command of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and their allies from Liwaa Al-Tawheed.

Unfortunately for Senator McCain, the Islamist rebel groups he attempted to propagate as “proud Syrian nationalists” are now fighting one another in northern Syria after both parties engaged in a disagreement over their alliances; most notably, the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Jabhat Al-Nusra” and their allies from Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham.

This morning [Dec. 8], several social media activists from both sides have reported intense firefights at the Mennagh Military Airport’s western countryside, where the Turkish-backed Islamist rebels are attempting to recapture the village of Shuwargha from the U.S. backed “Syrian Democratic Forces” (SDF); this latter group is led by Jamal Ma’rouf, the former leader of the disbanded Syrian Revolutionaries Front (SRF).

Preliminary reports from the Islamist social media activists indicate that Shuwargha has fallen to Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham; however, there has been no official confirmation from either party involved in this battle.

Recently, a ceasefire was almost implemented between the two opposing parties; unfortunately, it was rejected by the Syrian Democratic Forces’ Central Command after a series of demands were not met by the Turkish backed rebels.
