They only became useful to the “West” after the end of WW1, when the title of “king” was conferred on the head of the Saud tribe by the British. After WW2, the US took over from the UK the role of “guardian” of the Sauds. Bandar was the Saud ambassador to the US, in which capacity he came personally to know all the Bush family members, who all know full well his role in funding anti-Assad forces over – at least – the last 5 years.
I note current talks in Riyadh have concluded with a call for a “democratic mechanism through a pluralistic regime that represents all sectors of the Syrian people”.
Does anyone know why did they not think to call for exactly the same type of regime in Saud-controlled Arabia?
