Admins; As I suspect you wish to remain with Automattic, I have been looking around for a more sophisticated implementation of wp-comments-post.php than your setup to date and have found that http://www.unz.com seems to deploy it in a way that would meet most of the requirements of a commenting platform for yourselves and your users. You may wish to check it out.
Some unknowns:
(1) http://www.unz.com is hiding behind Cloudflare so without more digging than I have time to undertake, I don’t know if http://www.unz.com is running on an independent system or a hosting service like Automattic.
(2) I do know (have been told) that Automattic runs a modified version of WordPress. Without more research than I have time to undertake, I have no idea of compatibility issues, if any, between Automattic’s WordPress software and http://www.unz.com‘s, so do not know if http://www.unz.com‘s deployment would even run on Automattic’s platform.
(3) Lack of time has prevented me from digging into http://www.unz.com‘s code/markup to see how its commenting sophistication is achieved, and even if I had time for the raw process, getting up to speed with the WordPress platform enough to do it well would make using a competent WordPress developer a far more efficient option. Could be as simple as a (few) key plugin(s).
(4) I also know (from serving day job time in a more generalized “security” environment) that WordPress does not have a particularly good security record. If you are going to continue to use it in either a standalone or hosted environment then hiding it behind something like Cloudflare may be a good move. However, I do not know if an Automattic←→Cloudfarelike←→Visitor setup is feasible or what it might cost, or to what degree Automattic has unilaterally plugged WordPress’ holes thus making such a setup redundant.
Finally, I don’t know to what extent an Automattic site can be exported to a standalone setup and the content mirrored on the latter, or how difficult that would be but, if it were not just too onerous and OG sees encroaching net censorship as one of its visitors’ potential problems, then it might be worth considering an eventual Tor .onion mirror.
Also, a “Securedrop” sever running on a standalone platform could be useful (see https://securedrop.theguardian.com/ for an implementation example). I might be able to help with setting up and/or hosting a server, at least for a while and deadlines permitting, but not before the end of the year at the earliest.

Some still associate Britain with Democracy? Really?
The UK government paid Barrister Clare Montgomery to “DEFEND” Augusto Pinochet against an extradition
request for crimes against humanity, including genocide and terrorism.
….. and …..
The UK paid the costs of Sweden to “PROSECUTE” and extradite Julian Assange, a journalist without a charge.
Q: And who is the legal representative for Sweden in this case?
A: Clare Montgomery.
The above explained in this link:

Given the increasing shabbiness of theguardian‘s ethic, I believe that a name change is also called for. It is no longer appropriate that this site be tarred with the same grubby brush as that other site from which the Interneut has delivered us.
Coincidentally, in the spirit of progress, I am taking the liberty of here announcing the public launch of a movement to advance the cause that all victims of and protestants of any persuasion worldwide, including those protesting mainstream journalism’s manifest corruption (as exemplified by theguardian) should have an automatic, a priori right of return to Germany, with automatic citizenship granted to them on first arrival there, after a short ceremony involving the hammering of a symbolic nail into a symbolic newspaper’s banner.
The name the Elders have decided on for this nascent movement is “Prionizm” and I suggest that there is a good case for renaming this newly-refurbished Interneut presence “The Prionic Eye.”

Or more like >>

After reading about Steve Bell’s spat with Katherine Viner when she spiked his In memory of Razan al-Najjar…NOT cartoon because of its “conflation of Auschwitz ovens with the current unrest in Gaza” (and similar gobshite Prionazist “reasoning”) in a piece of unacceptable High Antisemitism, I was looking for a space to dump the load of fermenting mental vomit (hence the overmixed and overblown metaphors) that craven, insert-your-favourite-adjective-herearse-licking response from the Guardian’s senior content curator (fish rotting, as they do, from the head down) had induced in my recoiling conciousness, along with its crystallization of the growing feeling I’ve had that this site really should cut any banner reference to as vile a spectacle as the editorial stance of The Guardian on practically anything east of Dover except the twin Imperial Theocracies of Popes Barroso (High Priest Temporal) and Netanyaweh (Camp Commandant Spiritual).
When suddenly there was this mostly empty, slightly relevant space in which to throw it all up.
With the site name suggestion I was aiming for a kind of semi-homomorphic version of http://www.private-eye.co.uk/grfx/logos/private-eye-logo.gif but was interrupted by something more urgent and posted what should have been saved in a local text file as a first draft until/if I got back to it. Now, on getting back to it, I see that the attempt at an onomatopoeic conflation with the word “Zionism” doesn’t rate even as a first draft but “PRION EYE“, in the sense of being alert for the sort of doctrinaire shit that, like “rogue, twisted” disinformation, eats your brain.

My typo of my opinion that “…this site really should cut any banner reference…” should read “…this site really should cut any masthead reference…” Domain name? Probably needs to stay as is if too many existing readers aren’t to get lost. Would explain origins to any who wondered.

To catch up with the times 2 urgent areas need special attention:
1) a dedicated section on how the news about the Royal family constitute a solution to depression
2) Off-Guardian needs to have a full-time in-house war psychologist as is custom in big publishing houses. A position would be suitable for a dual national, of course. (My impression is The Guardian is now staffed exclusively by Establishment war psychologists)
/sarcasm

Well as long as the in-house war psychologist is an irascible namby pamby peace activist that would be fine. Along with a dyslexic subeditor; a financial editor who cannot do sums; a Zionist reporting in Syria and a Wahhabi reporting in Jerusalem; an oppostion leader who is in bed with the president; and a dipsomaniac Russia editor who thinks that Peru is in West Africa.
Then everything would be hunky dory.

With the exception of the peacenik war psychologists you’ve pretty much summed up the MSM as it is, not in some alternate reality

Is not an MI5 agent masquerading as a journalist also required on the permanent full-time staff?
Such people can be spotted 100 kilometres away: you know, those who cannot spell or string more than two words together in a sentence, oral and written, don’t care two hoots about plagiarising others’ work and who always seem to know in advance what devious dastardly and deadly deeds the Russian President is planning to commit in Britain in two weeks.
Oh and we must not forget the ditzy digital media journalist living in San Francisco or Los Angeles who knows everything there is to know happening in Syria.
