U.S. to ICC: We Will Break Your Legs

Andre Vltchek

Well, not exactly like that, but in a way, yes. Now, finally, ‘the gloves are off’. The U.S. is openly threatening the historically timid ICC (International Criminal Court) and its judges. And unexpectedly, the ICC is hitting back. It refuses to shut up, to kneel, and to beg for mercy.

Suddenly, even the Western mass media outlets cannot conceal the aggressive mafia-style outbursts of the U.S. government officials. On March 15, Reuters reported:

The United States will withdraw or deny visas to any International Criminal Court personnel investigating possible war crimes by U.S. forces or allies in Afghanistan, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday.

The court, which sits in The Hague, responded that it was an independent and impartial institution and would continue to do its work “undeterred” by Washington’s actions.

The Trump administration threatened in September to ban ICC judges and prosecutors from entering the United States and sanction funds they have there if the court launched a probe of war crimes in Afghanistan.

Washington took the first step on Friday with Pompeo’s announcement.

“I’m announcing a policy of U.S. visa restrictions on those individuals directly responsible for any ICC investigation of U.S. personnel,” Pompeo told a news conference in Washington.

“These visa restrictions may also be used to deter ICC efforts to pursue allied personnel, including Israelis, without allies’ consent.”

And so it goes… Mike Pompeo’s arrogant facial expression appeared above countless reports and it said it all: the world has to listen to the US dictates, or else!

Naturally, there is logic (even if twisted) behind the US threats. This is an extremely dangerous slope!

No country in the post WWII era has committed so many crimes against humanity, and supported so many genocides, as the United States of America. And in summary, no other part of the world has murdered more people on our planet, than Europe. And most North Americans are descendants of the Europeans. The ‘foreign policy’ of the U.S. is directly derived from colonialist policies of the former European powers. Therefore, crimes against humanity committed by the West have never stopped; never stopped for centuries.

This simple fact had been hushed up: never really openly discussed by the mass media outlets, in classrooms, or in the courts of law.

If the ICC begins and is allowed to investigate crimes against humanity committed by the West, the entire twisted concept of the U.S. and Europe being pioneers of freedom and democracy could easily and quickly collapse.

Even criticism by Washington, Paris or London of countries such as Venezuela, China or Russia, for their “human rights violations”, would become absurd and grotesque. Entire concept of ‘regime change’ could clearly be exposed for what it always really was – lawless gangsterism.

The U.S. rulers are well aware of the fact that this is ‘extremely bad timing’ for the Empire to allow challenges from some at least marginally independent international bodies.

They try to break all dissent. Like when in 2018, the U.S. and its close ally Israel left the at least partially rebellious intellectual body of the U.N. – UNESCO.

*

The West is clearly losing the ideological war, and it is panicking. And the more it panics, the more aggressive it gets.

One country after another is being defined as ‘undemocratic’ and designated for ‘regime change’. The methods are different. There are soft coups which have succeeded in overthrowing left-leaning governments in Argentina and later in Brazil. And there are hard methods used by the Empire in and against Afghanistan, Syria, Venezuela, Iran, Yemen, big parts of Africa, Nicaragua and North Korea.

The West openly supports genocides in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in West Papua occupied and plundered by Indonesia, in Indian occupied Kashmir, as well as the apartheid perpetrated by Israel.

The ICC is now concentrating on the crimes against humanity committed by the United States in Afghanistan, where at least 100,000 died as a result of the near two decades of NATO occupation. These crimes are real and undisputable. I have been working in Afghanistan, and could testify that the West (and particularly the U.S. and U.K.) brought this proud country into a despicable state.

But Afghanistan could be just the beginning; a proverbial Pandora box could open from there.

Most likely, if they take place, the trials against the U.S. and its crimes, would not right away prevent the terror the West is spreading all around the world. But they would open discussion, at least in the countries that have been victims of terrible injustice. Such trials would also help to realign the world: definitely towards Russia and China, and back towards socialism in Latin America and most likely in Africa and parts of Asia.

*

Pompeo’s speech was so extreme that it could be easily defined as counter-productive for the Empire.

Even the mainstream Western press had to react. Even the Western ‘human rights organizations’ felt obliged to protest.

On March 15, AP published an unprecedented report:

Human Rights Watch called it “a thuggish attempt to penalize investigators” at the ICC.

“The Trump administration is trying an end run around accountability,” it said. “Taking action against those who work for the ICC sends a clear message to torturers and murderers alike: Their crimes may continue unchecked.”

Amnesty International described the move as “the latest attack on international justice and international institutions by an administration hellbent on rolling back human rights protections.”

The American Civil Liberties Union, which represents three people before the ICC who say they were tortured in Afghanistan, called the decision “misguided and dangerous” and “an unprecedented attempt to skirt international accountability for well-documented war crimes that haunt our clients to this day.”

A great part of the world is already horrified by the latest attacks of the West against Venezuela, and by attempts to push countries like China, Russia and North Korea towards military conflict.

Such a barefaced shove for impunity will not go well in many parts of the world.

It was always understood that the West has been forcing the planet to accept its ‘exceptionalism’. But it was understood only or predominantly by a well-informed minority of the people.

The latest headlines will be reaching the masses, on all continents.

Mr. Pompeo made one huge tactical mistake. He touched the ‘big topic’ that was always supposed to be ‘understood’ but unpronounced. Now it is out in the open.

The next step could be the acknowledgment that international law does not apply to the West.

Once this undisputable fact is pronounced, what may follow could be an outrage, and finally, refusal to accept the status quo, at least by several countries, and by billions of people worldwide.

It appears that the Empire has gone one step too far. As a result, paradoxically, its impunity could be really in jeopardy.

The only way is for private individuals to Yankee goods.

It certainly seems to annoy the Israeli government.

US made a major policy shift this week which will, no doubt, upset the Middle East. On Thursday, Trump tweeted that the US will recognize the Golan Heights as belonging to Israel. This shift in policy came right before the annual AIPAC conference–and will no doubt help Trump (and the Republicans) with fundraising going into the 2020 election. I would also note the US allowing Saudi Arabia access to nuclear technology (which was announced earlier in the week)–is this the “trade off”? The Saudis get nuclear technology gifted by the US; in return the Saudis allow Israel to take possession of the Golan Heights?

The US, specifically the Republicans and Trump, are 100% Zionists. One of Trump’s major backers in the 2016 election was Sheldon Adelson. Adelson pressured Trump to move the US Embassy to Tel Aviv; he also pressured Trump to name PNAC neocon John Bolton as National Security Advisor (one of the top cabinet level positions). In 2017, Bolton was given the “Guardian of Zion” award in Israel.

It seems as if US Sec. of State Mike Pompeo would like to receive the “Guardian of Zion” award, too. (Pompeo also served a short stint as CIA Director before ‘Bloody’ Gina Haspel was nominated/confirmed). This week Pompeo–while threatening the ICC–also added: “These visa restrictions may also be used to deter ICC efforts to pursue allied personnel, including Israelis, without allied consent.”

Pompeo is a rabid Christian Zionist–heaving been filmed in 2015 ending a sermon in a Kansas church fervently cheering the delegation to await the coming of “The Rapture.” In Pompeo’s short stint as CIA Director, he apparently even made these types of remarks to CIA personnel which, supposedly, spooked the spooks.

No doubt the US is aggressively looking to forward the Zionist goals of Israel–it remains to be determined how many (more) Arabs, Muslims and US soldiers will die so Israel can expand it’s borders and political power.

what is it that makes Americans tolerate child poverty, child malnutrition, crumbling roads and bridges and crime so that their corrupt government can increase the unaccountable Pentagon budget and send their money to Israel? The Israeli standard of living is much higher than large segments of the American population. Not that they haven’t earned what comes from their own economy, but the handouts and chronic relentless cadging seem grotesquely out of line.

Spiegel has today a German language article re Brexit and mentions a brain condition/deficiency that makes people incapable of learning from mistakes. I kid you not. In some parts it uses terms that are at home in propaganda, but since it is not (yet) the 1st April we take that on board. It’s a brain disease! It is the same in the US – same things again and again.

If Pompeo is so keen to make enemies left, right, and centre he is only pursuing what America has done over the decades. In some of of the history books I read that the rapprochement with China (70s and 80s) was part of a plan to drive a wedge between China and the Soviet Union/Russia.

…. and then they implemented sanctions, achieving the exact opposite. You could not make that up.

The interference with the ICC is of course what criminals everywhere do if they can. Appoint corrupt judges, corrupt prosecutors, and if that fails, kill the witnesses or bomb the courthouse, Is there not a little irony in the fact that the Mueller report spends much energy on whether the Trump Admin obstructed justice? The American government could gold medal in obstructing justice, making it an endangered species in their own country, and abroad.

John Bolton, national security adviser to President Trump, has long opposed the ICC, and before assuming his post urged Mr. Trump to “strangle the ICC in its cradle.”

Strangle it in its cradle? What a revealing metaphor. This is more and more like the villains from cartoons every day.

The USA’s record of aggression, de-stabilization, removal of democratically elected governments, Installation of Stooge governments etc etc since World War II has been appalling. Estimates of 20,000,000 mostly innocent people have been slaughtered ‘en mass’ by Uncle Sam’s Air Force during, and since the Korean War. Vietnam was NOT the first country to be “Carpet Bombed” by the USA. Brian harry – (“The World has lost respect for the totally Corrupted USA Government.”) – Oh, how I wish and hoped this to be true Brian! Your comments on the completely criminal nature of the U.S. government are absolutely accurate – and the history of our criminal behavior in the world fills many volumes.

As an American citizen I had very high hopes that the election of Trump “The Orange One” would at least have one “silver lining,” that is that it would make it impossible for leaders like May, Macron and Merkel to attempt to rally their citizens to support the next bit of U.S. criminality on the international stage given how obviously unhinged and odious said Orange One clearly is. However, the fact that these and other Western governments have rallied behind the U.S. randomly naming, “random Guaido,” to the presidency of Venezuela, brazenly attempting a very transparent coup, suggests there is simply no limit to Western hypocrisy when neocolonial plunder is the name of the game.

The international rouge terror State I call home is now presided over by a malignantly narcissistic reality TV star, an assemblage of recycled amoral psychopathic neocon war criminals, and a bunch of evangelical military nut jobs entranced by visions of the coming “Rapture.” A “Rapture” they no doubt see themselves playing some valiant role in initiating through U.S. military actions in the Middle East.

My vision of a global community united in “silver lining” opposition to my rouge superpower government ruled by such an insane and odious cabal has sadly crumbled into ashes. It was, I will admit, a bit of a “reality check” for me, as I never thought Europe could stoop so low as to support the current blatant U.S. criminal actions directed toward Venezuela. I really thought there were “limits” to how blatant violations of international law could be when apparently there are none.

I can only imagine Brian that the citizens of Europe and much of the world feel as un-represented by their own governments given such events, as I do by mine here in the U.S. How else to explain the complete lawless insanity and barbarity being passed off as “support for democracy” and “support for human rights” year after year by Western MSM? Meanwhile seemingly endless human suffering continues – Yemen, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Venezuela, Gaza, Africa as an entire continent . . . . . the carnage all aided, funded, or directed by the oh so humanitarian – “Western democracies” – for all of which the U.S. arrogantly acts as chief mafia don, enforcer and assassin.

Nothing personal it’s just business [as usual] has been the US line in diplomacy, well… for ever.

Where they went badly wrong was under the neo-liberal banner when they started to believe the crap about the end of history. And through that they actually adopted the belief that they were somehow exceptional. Unfortunately it was all based on lies, and as anyone knows that is not the best way to run a belief system. When the model is corrupted. Ask Brennan, Muller, Steel, Dearlove et.al. Or other notorious war criminals who strut the world stage unhampered by truth.

“International affairs is very much run like the mafia. The godfather does not accept disobedience, even from a small storekeeper who doesn’t pay his protection money. You have to have obedience; otherwise, the idea can spread that you don’t have to listen to the orders, and it can spread to important places.” Noam Chomsky who is not a don said that. Someone who was said this, “I never lie to any man because I don’t fear anyone. The only time you lie is when you are afraid” ~ John Gotti.

Looks like the US ran out of guts, metaphorically speaking in Pompeo’s case.

Afghanistan is rarely a topic on Off-Guardian.

Note worthy is operation Cyclone.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Cyclone#Background
In the mid-1970s, Pakistani intelligence officials began privately lobbying the U.S. and its allies to send material assistance to the Islamist insurgents. Pakistani President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq’s ties with the U.S. had been strained during Jimmy Carter’s presidency due to Pakistan’s nuclear program and the execution of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in April 1979, but Carter told National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski and Secretary of State Cyrus Vance as early as January 1979 that it was vital to “repair our relationships with Pakistan” in light of the unrest in Iran.

I also remember the Kunduz airlift in November 2001 where Rumsfeld & co let the Taliban, Al Qaida and ISI top escape to Pakistan. See they were helping refugees.

The devil is in the details….

The US has for decades now played India and Pakistan against each other. If these two could only understand that they are being used. A Gorbachev biography I currently read, says Zia was assassinated, but it can probably not be said openly or the US would have to take violent revenge for the two US diplomats (‘diplomats’?) who went down with him.

They have something to hide, what they did in Afghanistan.

I don’t think this is really about the ICC getting brave and taking on the US government, so much as it is about neocon/neolib interventionists trying to hurt the Trump administration. Did the ICC go after W or Obama?

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International are dubious players, given HRW’s pimping stories about Assad using “barrel bombs” and gas attacks and AI circulating the fiction that Gaddafi was super-charging his troops’ rape abilities with Viagra supplements … and all the other instances of HRW and AI being used to spread Western intel agencies’ propaganda to facilitate wars.

This character is supposed to be America’s “chief diplomat.”
A while ago he threatened to murder Assange: “We’re going to whack the son of a bitch in the street.”
“If they want their people to eat, they have to do as they’re told.” (Of Iran.)
Then there are the crude threats of war criminals like Bolton and Abrams to Venezuela and Iran,
And Tillerson crowing that economic strangulation was causing fishermen in DPRK to take risks, with some of them being drowned as a result.
This subhuman filth are what passes for a government in America.
The Orange Baboon croaks like a two bit mafia hood: ” We gotta grab the oil! We gotta grab the oil!! They gotta pay us! They gotta pay us!! They gotta pay for their protection!!”

But this is nothing new, of course.
US economic strangulation of Iraq cost the lives of 500,000 children under 5.
40% of humanity is currently subject to US economic strangulation.

And nothing will change until Americans have to watch THEIR children starve to death in front of them or die for lack of basic medical treatment.
Like Germans starving and freezing in the rubble of their ruined cities in 1945.
That’s what it will take for them to finally clean up their act.
An almighty kick in the balls. Preferably a nuclear one.
When it finally does, it couldn’t happen to nicer people.

The United Nations should grow some cojones and begin plans to move – lock, stock and barrel – to China? Or anywhere outside the US. How can they possibly carry out their mandate while being housed by the scofflaws and Boss Tweed wannabes in power in the US? As soon as they do anything that the ruling neocons dislike, the US will reneg/refuse to pay their share of costs. Whoops, they’ve being doing that for decades. I am not familiar enough with the UN charter but the founders may have put in contingency plans in case a Security Council member went rogue, like the US has. If not , what an oversight. But the whole veto process is absurd and it has neutered the only body which has global representation.

There should never be permanency in any such role as Security Council membership. There must be a way out and all attempts should be explored. Otherwise, the “bankruptcy” approach might work. Everyone could withdraw and start a new organization, called let’s say, the United League of Decent Nations. Bully-boy predatory conscience-less nations need not apply. Admission by simple majority vote by a small number of countries who have not invaded their neighbours in the last two centuries nor have engineered genocide in their own. That leaves a few.
