Wikipedia: A Disinformation Operation?

from Swiss Propaganda Research

Credit: iStock

Wikipedia is generally thought of as an open, transparent, and mostly reliable online encyclopedia. Yet upon closer inspection, this turns out not to be the case.

In fact, the English Wikipedia with its 9 billion page views per month is governed by just 500 active administrators, whose real identity in many cases remains unknown.

Moreover, studies have shown that 80% of all Wikipedia content is written by just 1% of all Wikipedia editors, which again amounts to just a few hundred mostly unknown people.

Obviously, such a non-transparent and hierarchical structure is susceptible to corruption and manipulation, the notorious “paid editors” hired by corporations being just one example.

Indeed, already in 2007, researchers found that CIA and FBI employees were editing Wikipedia articles on controversial topics including the Iraq war and the Guantanamo military prison.

Also in 2007, researchers found that one of the most active and influential English Wikipedia administrators, called “Slim Virgin”, was in fact a former British intelligence informer.

More recently, another highly prolific Wikipedia editor going by the false name of “Philip Cross” turned out to be linked to UK intelligence as well as several mainstream media journalists.

In Germany, one of the most aggressive Wikipedia editors was exposed, after a two-year legal battle, as a political operative formerly serving in the Israeli army as a foreign volunteer.

Even in Switzerland, unidentified government employees were caught whitewashing Wikipedia entries about the Swiss secret service just prior to a public referendum about the agency.

Many of these Wikipedia personae are editing articles almost all day and every day, indicating that they are either highly dedicated individuals, or in fact, operated by a group of people.

In addition, articles edited by these personae cannot easily be revised, since the above-mentioned administrators can always revert changes or simply block disagreeing users altogether.

The primary goal of these covert campaigns appears to be pushing Western and Israeli government positions while destroying the reputation of independent journalists and politicians.

Articles most affected by this kind of manipulation include political, geopolitical and certain historical topics as well as biographies of non-conformist academics, journalists, and politicians.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, a friend of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and a “Young Leader” of the Davos forum, has repeatedly defended these operations.

Speaking of Davos, Wikimedia has itself amassed a fortune of more than $160 million, donated in large part not by lazy students, but by major US corporations and influential foundations.

Moreover, US social media and video platforms are increasingly referring to Wikipedia to frame or combat “controversial” topics. The revelations discussed above may perhaps help explain why.

To add at least some degree of transparency, German researchers have developed a free web browser tool called WikiWho that lets readers color code just who edited what in Wikipedia.

In many cases, the result looks as discomforting as one might expect.

I think Wiki is invaluable, BUT for ironic reasons….

Richard

Wikipedia is definitely a disinformation, propaganda and false-history-cementation website.
Wikipedia doesn’t say Osama bin Laden is accused of masterminding the events of 9/11, it says he DID (as an absolute fact) mastermind the events of 9/11.
Wikipedia doesn’t say Lee Harvey Oswald is accused of assassinating JFK, it says he DID (as an absolute fact) assassinate JFK.
Statements of compulsively lying U.S. government agencies like the CIA & FBI (and their pals) are essentially gospel on Wikipedia.
That should tell you all you need to know.

And it’s not just Wikipedia.
There is an extremely strong pattern of “of the people” projects & movements turning out to be “control the people” projects & movements.
As of writing this, it looks like Firefox is about to join the list.

I’ve caught them fronting all kinds of absurd things at their Sirhan Sirhan entry. Time and again

Still, much you can use if it’s not a controversial issue.

You just need to know your subject and cross-check like crazy.

Unfortunately few, or no, other sites have such a compendium of information.

I’ve been a Wikipedia editor for many years, editing under numerous guises. I first fell out of favour with ‘the project’ when I came up against and editor who was hell-bent on removing all references to “British Isles” from the encyclopedia. He was eventually stopped in his tracks, but not before an enormous amount of collateral damage. I now edit mostly as what they describe as ‘an IP editor’. This has demonstrated to me one of the worst aspects of Wikipedia: a complete disregard for one of the founding principles, that “anyone can edit Wikipedia”, or as Jimmy Wales says, “you can edit this page right now!” No you can’t. At least, not if it’s a page that’s in any way important. Most major articles are now permanently protected from IP editors, usually by bum administrators with an agenda of making the project an account-only entity. They protect an article… Read more »

I think the only thing you can do – and encourage others to do – is always to check the references and try a few other sites as well i.e. cross reference. I sometimes go to Powerbase and Wikispooks – although every site I visit usually throws up some bias or other and, if you note those, you ought to be able to piece together a more credible picture than otherwise.

Nothing surprising in this. I’d be surprised if it wasn’t manipulated. I go by a simple philosophy: there’s only one truth – there isn’t one. But you’ve not mentioned the main area of manipulation – culture itself. As a case in point, one of my interests concerns the unexplained, where I do not debunk, but attempt rational explanation. Culture dictates scepticism on such subjects throughout Wiki. How about you lot? Atlantis, Loch Ness Monster, the Poltergeist.

Like you Anthony, I seek the essence of truth wherever I might find it. For this I have rules: In assessing the truth of reports I use a couple of mantras: • Always follow the money • There is never such a thing as a coincidence. • Never underestimate the evil of the powers that be • Occam’s Razor In March 2013 the Cyprus bank crisis turned out to be a test run for the ‘Bail-in’ process to protect banks during a future bank run. It had been modelled earlier. My book starts with the Cyprus event. https://www.theburningplatform.com/2020/03/07/the-financial-jigsaw-issue-no-94/ This time we have Event 201 in October 2019 and a release of the exact same postulated virus in November 2019 – coincidence? Furthermore, to be Senior Scientific Officer in the British Antarctic Survey you’d need to be a PhD, they don’t just send anyone out there nor freely hand out senior titles.

The anthropogenic climate destabilisation catastrophe scenario deserves to be ventilated. The MSM and the various denialist disinformation sites certainly won’t-in fact they deny that the destabilisation is even happening, as climate and weather disasters grow rapidly. In fact the ‘catastrophe’ scenarios of various intensity from calamitous to Near Term Human Extinction are utterly unarguable, save with sophistry, casuistry and outright disinformation.

I invite other AAPA (awake and paying attention) people to join me in a comprehensive boycott of Wikideceivia. I make a point of NEVER consulting it, on any topic at all, on the principle that anything pulled from a toxic sewer is near-certain to be contaminated, however apparently non-controversial it may seem to be. And how would we ever be able to tell which stuff is sound and which is shite? It’s not as if scientists and academics have simply never been caught in intellectually-corrupt practices in recent times, is it? On the same principle, I invariably refuse to accept Wikideceivia as an information-source offered by others. I hold to a variant of the famous motto (questionable grammar and all) ascribed to the Roman senator Cato the Elder: Wikideceivia delenda est! (Wikideceivia must be destroyed!) You dson’t have to come up with cute but derogatory names for it. Just use a bit of common sense. I use Wikipedia for a lot of day to day information, most of it technical, some of it historical. All this can be described as ‘non-controversial’. I obviously tread very carefully should I look up contemporary topics – contested science, current affairs and politics — because they’re not only controversial but their veracity is usually a matter of opinion, which in this day and age is often ‘who can shout the loudest’.

You don’t condemn all books because a lot of what’s published is crap so why dump on this publishing medium?

Like everything on the internet a case of caveat emptor applies, whether it be a MSM article, a blog, a shop, Google, Wikipedia or even Off Guardian. 😉

If I am interested in a subject I always cross check as far as I can and if I am very interested I try to get all the way back to the original source. Of course, too many of us simply do not have the time let alone inclination.

But the article is correct, Wikipedia is grossly contaminated. It is a useful reference for general biographies (caveat emptor again, whether it is Wiki or a book), hard science and technology (except for some areas like climate ‘science’) but for anything that is relevant or in any way controversial it is always highly suspect.

Wikipedia is a crock of misinformation – it always has been. Adopt the large pinch of salt stance when reading and never rely on it for accuracy. Example:- Wiki page for a certain railway station (closed in the Beeching corruption era) has a photo claiming to be the station ….. it is a house next to the local village shop (also closed). A simple, non-life-threatening error …. but it is there for all to see. Wiki is an aid, that is all and much like the MSM, it is a propaganda tool. Nobody fact checks the fact checkers and if we choose to, we will allow the rewriting of history. Just look to google maps to find Palestine.

“sceptic” forums in general, tend to be instinctive defenders of the Official Story. It would be interesting to understand the psychological processes in operation, wherein nonsensical “science” is used to support the most unscientific conclusions imaginable; the 9/11 event being, as always, a paradigmatic example.

Presumably, many of their inhabitants are on somebody’s payroll, with the usual consequences for understanding evidence and arguments that might get you removed from that payroll.

On a common garden level I note that living history is an incendiary thing to seek to write – try it with your family. His story, her story – whats with the narrative struggle for identity – as if the one who judges last above all other judgement? Greed is for those who can never have enough, most know it as restlessness – or driven compulsive thought and habit. Seeking control of the narrative is also learning to operate under narrative controls. When was the golden age of free speech? The self-inflated belief in a fantasy leads to outrage when it pops. I am not writing to condone malice – but to open the dialogue to include the otherwise invisible structuring of thought and consciousness. Truth – as I use the word is always also an inner resonance of alignment and purpose and not an Object to be fought over… Read more »

verbosity IS the enemy of clarity.

— on the other hand, verbosity is the friend of disruption, diversion, and derailment.

although the output of the “Binra” operation has improved, recently; it’s lost the obviously machine-generated quality that it used to have. The algorithms must have been improved, or the amount of human supervision increased.

— it’s the sheer QUANTITY of gobbledygook that suggests that it must be largely machine-generated. (the Po-Mo generator, above, never gets tired, or runs out of jargon.)

I couldn’t manage to produce that volume of meaningless nonsense, continuously, day after day, month after month, no matter how delusionally self-important I felt.

Could you? Could anyone?

Winston had finished his bread and cheese. He turned a little sideways in his chair to drink his mug of coffee. At the table on his left the man with the strident voice was still talking remorselessly away. A young woman who was perhaps his secretary, and who was sitting with her back to Winston, was listening to him and seemed to be eagerly agreeing with everything that he said. From time to time Winston caught some such remark as ‘I think you’re so right, I do so agree with you’, uttered in a youthful and rather silly feminine voice. But the other voice never stopped for an instant, even when the girl was speaking. Winston knew the man by sight, though he knew no more about him than that he held some important post in the Fiction Department. He was a man of about thirty, with a muscular throat… Read more »

I do not speak to the sleeping – but to the waking. You may engage in the futility of trying to change the will of others as if to vindicate your own – and MUST do so until you recognise it is not only futile but at cost of your own awareness of being. That which is already moving – is seeking and finding according to the stirring and prompting of a rising awareness. The ego is the attempt to take credit for, and exercise control over life as a pre and post judgmental reaction and response. The ego steals your life by substitution with surrogate reality. But only with the power you give it in the wish to be judge, definer and determiner of your own reality. I had read and experienced and opened a lot, before I came to realise it was all a sandcastle. You wake as… Read more »

If you had any specific point I would respond. Every word or phrase comes to me from the simple desire to give expression to an ‘insider’ view – in concert with outer perceptions or interpretations. Not insider to cabals or cartels – but inside the human psyche. Perhaps you are not aware of the structure through which your thought and response are framed? The manipulations in play COULD be educating you as to the way the mind is structured – but you still think you are the exception? (This is an other way of describing the belief ‘slavery is freedom’ but at a deeper root than Orwell’s mythology) I am interested to uncovering fresh and embracing perspective rather than persisting the same old and tired identity conflict. This means addressing what runs beneath our reality presumptions, beliefs and mutually reinforcing definitions. Yet the mind of identity conflict is founded on… Read more »

Then stop identifying with them as ‘our’ or ‘me- thoughts’. If I were posting ‘my thinking’ it would be all about me. The mad monkey house is ‘all about me’ and reads everything as the output of the competition of me-narratives. The point of releasing chatterbox is not become a vacuous assertion of non dual ‘me’, but to become an instrument of wholeness of being. Thoughts have no more power than you give them. If you give them the power to judge or determine reality you give them the power to conflict or oppose reality – and – in case you forgot – that includes You. My comment on relational space is that without willingness to listen, there is no communication. Only a seeming communication of separate ‘me-thinking’ in search of me-defence reinforcement. “On having no head” is direct to the realisation that where you THINK your head to be… Read more »

I met Barry Long way back when. If the shoe fits… wear it. I do not ‘think’ to generate posts – so much as align in relational willingness and flow. The presumption that you should stop thinking is an endless spiritual absurdity if taken as a process by which to GET something, Just release invested identity in whatever is not aligned to your consciously accepted purpose – Now – and be an open conduit for being whole in whatever you do – as the acceptance of wholeness of being instead of a filtered and distorted translation to the terms of your construct. (through a glass darkly) No matter how sussed your ‘construct’ it cannot be ‘applied’ but you can devote your life to the wish and belief you can. Just be still. Alight in the grace of the Movement of your being that includes your self-awareness as noticing That You… Read more »

indeed, Wikipedia isn’t the first encyclopedia to publish disinfo, but it IS the first to insinuate itself into the very fabric of the internet. what do you think Alexa & Siri consult when you ask them a question? what does Google throw up in its “knowledge boxes” in response to a search query? Wikipedia has a far greater reach than any of the encyclopedias of old, & people are consuming its lies when they do not realize it (whereas in the past no one ever “accidentally” consumed Britannica or Encarta). it also purports to be crowd-sourced when it is very clearly an intelligence operation, as reading any of the pieces linked in the above article will tell you (especially mine! also available in an easily-digestible video version version).

Yikes. imagine being so utterly delusional you actually think something as undeniably heavily left-leaning as “Wikipedia”, is controlled by conservatives. It’s really astonoshing how far removed from reality you people are, what are you gonna say next – mainstream media is run by conservatives as well. All you need to do is look at some political articles relating to non-liberal subjects, Trump especially. The bias is blatant, to actually deny this is beyond lunacy.
And no matter where you are on the political spectrum, unless you’re a complete idealological puppet without a critical mind, you would acknowledge this AND you should be bothered by it. Wikipedia is just one of the global corporations who is pushing a leftist agenda. Step outside your tiny intellectual bubble and just look at the facts instead, and less time inside your idealogue self-affirming echo chamber

one of many examples specified here: https://larrysanger.org/2020/05/wikipedia-is-badly-biased/

Jimmy Wales: Porn-Peddler-cum-Paid-Hasbara-Agent In a revelation that will no-doubt raise eyebrows amongst Wikipedia users, in 1996 Jimmy Wales co-founded an online Internet portal called Bomis which sold porn and explicit material to users. The following, actually taken from the Wikipedia article for Bomis(2) adds context: Bomis became successful after focusing on X-rated media. “Bomis Babes” was devoted to erotic images; the “Bomis Babe Report” featured adult pictures. Bomis Premium, available for an additional fee, provided explicit material. “The Babe Engine” helped users find erotic content through a web search engine. The advertising director for Bomis noted that 99 percent of queries on the site were for nude women. Even the New York Times reports that the creation of Wikipedia was financed by Wales’ earlier porn venture,(3) whereby he would literally hand deliver cheques from Bomis porn revenues in order to keep Wikipedia’s servers running. On a perhaps related but definitely… Read more »

Well, if you ignore the treatment of Palestinian women, imprisoned, tortured, subject to forced nakedness at check-points, their children routinely murdered, their houses destroyed etc, the victims of Israel’s booming sex-trafficking and pornography businesses, the orthodox and ultra-orthodox women afflicted by Talmudic subjection, and poor Israeli women living in the second most unequal country in the OECD, then the remaining Israeli women probably have it pretty good, living comfortable lives on stolen land.
