From my own reading, the SA-11 missile (which is the missile type used in the BUK missile delivery systems) is indeed designed to reach a position above the target and then explode several thousand pieces of shrapnel (diamond or bowtie-shaped) over it.

At the same time it was struck by the explosion, the target Boeing 777-200ER would have been cruising at a speed of 890 km/h with a maximum speed of 945 km/h.

So while the missile was exploding, the entire body of the jet might have passed beneath the explosion and the shrapnel might have penetrated the entire body of the jet. It’s likely then that most if not all passengers and crew must have been hit by shrapnel and much of that shrapnel embedded in most victims’ bodies. That would be one conclusion we might draw from the scenario of an SA-11 missile exploding above the plane and shooting its payload into and along the length of the plane.

So it’s something of a surprise then that an Australian pathologist, having participated in autopsies on the Australian victims of the shoot-down, finds that “… missile injuries [are] rare but present …”.
