I’ve come to think that the only way to protect oneself is to spend less time online, leave phone at home when you go out or keep it turned it off and use it only in emergencies. It’s reaching ridiculous proportions, eg with the qr code menus. Just say politely that you left home in order to have time away from digital life so if they don’t have paper or even your basic “Greta-friendly” blackboards then you’re happy to eat elsewhere.

Google maps doesn’t always show street names and all the establishments on the street so if you just want to take a quick look at the offline map and then figure out for yourself where you are, it’s not that easy. It’s like they selectively hide info so you’re forced to turn on the location feature especially when you’re in cities with hundreds of narrow streets whose names change every 50 metres.

When I ask for directions only people over 50 or 60 seem to know north from south and how to give directions without a phone. People under 30, good luck if you can even make eye contact with 95% of Most (but not all) don’t know how to read maps but depend on listening to google. Unless they have a dog and live in the neighbourhood in which case they can probably assist you.
