I also feel the nostalgia, though I have to restrain myself. It’s always easy to think that the world of your childhood was a wonderful world because, when you’re a child, you are naturally ignorant about what’s going on.

So I recall with fondness e.g. those Morecambe and Wise Christmas shows which, unthinkably nowadays, attracted half of the UK population. But then these shows served the same purpose as Martin and Rowan’s Laugh-In over in the states i.e. they generated a spurious sense of togetherness as the big stars of the day lined up to make fools of themselves. (That, in the UK, the BBC owned these big stars helped of course!)
