NATO Actions Contradict their Values

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg regularly confirms the alliance’s commitment to strive for peace, safety and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region, in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN-Charter. “Our actions are aimed to defend individual liberty, human rights, democracy and the rule of law”. That’s what he usually claims at summits and meetings with chiefs of Foreign and Defense Departments of NATO member-countries.
However, the alliance’s activity shows otherwise. Numerous heads of states and international organizations frequently denounce NATO war crimes and unauthorized use of forces.
Thus, in the recent few months, the US and its allies have been accused of the following violations:
- warplanes of the US-led international coalition launched airstrikes in the countryside of al-Bukamal city in eastern Syria and killed at least 30 civilians, reported Syria’s news agency SANA on July, 13. While Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs recalled that the US presence in Syria is illegal, since the begining of the conflict.”
- according to a report, made by a group of Libyan nuclear experts, NATO used depleted uranium munitions in 2011 libya airstrikes
- Nicaraguan president, Daniel Ortega, condemned United States interference in Nicaragua’s policy. Nicaragua “has always been a target of North American (United States) politics,” and it is, for this reason, several U.S. agencies have “prepared the people” to be against the Sandinista government, the Nicaraguan head of state said in an interview with CNN en Espanol.
- the president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, warned of the U.S. plans to invade Venezuela. “Before the elections they will carry out violent actions supported by the media and after the elections they will try a military invasion with Armed Forces from neighboring countries,” President Morales said on his official Twitter account.
Of course, the U.S. destabilasing activity is not limited to this short list. It’s sufficient to mention NATO intervention in Yugoslavia in 1999 without the approval of the United Nations Security Council. Over a thousand NATO warplanes delivered at least 2,000 airstrikes in nearly 40,000 sorties, dropping over 20,000 bombs over the former Yugoslavia, killing thousands of civilian men, women, and children.
In 2001, the U.S. forces tortured and humiliated prisoners in Afghanistan. U.S. phosphorus bombs were dropped on Iraq in 2003 despite the protocol III of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons, which bans its use as an incendiary weapon against civilian populations.
All the facts above make it clear that NATO’s values have nothing to do with their purposes, and its commitment to democracy and law doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.

If we are talking about NATO, or NATO values (whatever they might be: made apparent by their actions, not their propaganda) …we now must talk of NATO/EU. The EU is undergoing a rapid sub-imperial military expansion, coordination and unification of inter-operable military forces (PESCO) and a common defence fund (European Defence Fund: EDF). The provisions stem from the 2009 Lisbon Treaty,the 2016 EU Global Strategy for Foreign and Security Policy (EUGS), and the Co-ordinated Annual Review of Defefence (CARD). 17 projects have been agreed, and are being planned, and we can expect an announcement – from our unelected and unnaccountable Foreign Secretary Mogherini – as to what they are shortly.
But don’t worry, the individual sovereignty of the constituent nation states will not be affected by a co-ordinated foreign policy, joint sub-imperial military operations, and a common pool of defence capital. That’s why it was in the manifesto of both major parties at the last election; was, and is, a major consideration in the Brexit (without the exit) debate; and is all completely open, transparent and accountable …so that we can have our democratic say. No, this is being done in complete circumvention of Parliament and media: completely ignored and off the political agenda. So no loss of sovereignty then?

Using the manufactured-for-the-purpose ‘migrant crisis’ the EU plans to expand, incorporate and parasitically peripheralise the sub-Sahel and Middle East to create a ‘United States of MENA’ …using UK taxpayer funds (that are already going to the EDA: we are already the principle funders this with our Defence Budget) and UK military forces as enforcers for the ECB (and BIS).
But don’t worry: co-operative sub-imperialism will save us money over having to do it ourselves! All we have to give up is our sovereignty; defence buget, control of foreign policy, control of defence procurement, and eventually our taxation to Brussels in return. Wow, that’s value for ex nihilo money that could be spent on welfare or the NHS instead!

Were it not such a threat to human survival NATO’s continued existence would be a sort of bad joke. Now Colombia’s death-squad democracy joining as a “partner” country is a sort of cherry on top I suppose. Colombian elites kill 10,000+ labor and union activists and members and they get an invitation to join NATO so they can help destabilize Venezuela – err, rather, so they can bring human rights to the rest of Latin America – NOT. There is a certain perfect symmetry to the psychopathic posturing of the West as a bastion of “human rights” while it’s imperial slaughters continue unimpeded by either the U.N. or by Western public opinion.
The corruption, mass violence and colonial pillage by the West has been THE STORY on planet earth for the last 500+ years. NATO is just another part of that story. If the disclosure of Operation Gladio and it’s domestic State sponsored terrorism (against the citizens of Europe) didn’t sink NATO it is hard to imagine continuing to kill non-Europeans will have any negative impact.
In what alternative universe one wonders is NATO’s purpose: “to defend individual liberty, human rights, democracy and the rule of law.” Certainly not this one.
The fact that NATO was not dismantled after the Warschau pact was abolished in 1991 says it all: it was not so much created to counter the USSR but to assist US domination in Europe and abroad. A tool just like the UN in New York or the IMF.

The level of this ‘article’ is very low, as usual, and people should be making a bigger effort if they want to explain things to others. Just a few notes:
1) SANA (and Iranian officials) is the OFFICIAL news agency of the Syrian regime, its news should be taken, at least, with a pichn of salt. Furthermore, it should be assumed by default that SANA is lying. Of course, others are lying too, but experience tells us that ‘Western’ or international agencies lie in another way, as they are subject to competition and their fake ‘news’ could be contrasted.
2) Depleted Uranium is a logical material for military use, as it is very dense, flammable and sharp, making it very good for munitions. Many armies use it (UK, USA, Russia, etc) and those who don’t it is probably because they cannot get hold of it and not out of the goodness of their hearts. There are certain dangers in its use, but in war situations it is not used as a poisson or radioactive material, even though there could be a risk of that.
3) The Nicaraguan President and his wife, have created a Monarchy under leftist trappings and, basically, reproduced the Somoza regime that the Sandinista Revolution was supposed to destroy. The protests in Nicaragua were sparked by ultra-liberal (IMF, your usual enemy) plans to reduce pensions and SS benefits and increase contributions. The usual theft of the workers. This is a lightweight article and the points raised here are well covered in more detail in other articles, so not sure what purpose of this piece actually is, It could serve as an intorduction into something much meatier.
If you want to highlight the hypocricy of NATO, indeed the downright lies, then Libya, Syria, and Yemen are possibly the best examples In terms of sheer killing power, their Gulf Wars were the worst.
NATO’s 1999 attacks on the remaining “rump” state of Yugoslavia (Slovenian and Croatia had broken away 8 years earlier) were shocking in that NATO was bombing European terrritory for the first time since WW2 and designed to completely neutralise Serbia, and seperate Kosovo from Serbia, including killing thousands of innocents in the process.
In summary, there’s is NATO hypocrisy all across history and current affairs today. This hypocrisy stinks to high heaven and back, yet tha average NATO citizen cannot see it let alone smell it.
Their manipulative media have won the game, especially now that “The Great Purge” is underway as alternative media is being erradicated and where an official line will prevail. Totalitarainism is almost complete.
