Knocking off the Odd Man Out

David Macilwain

Following the alleged US raid and destruction of a house in NW Syria on 28th October where the notional leader of Da’esh was allegedly living, I spent some time analysing photographs and satellite images of the site.

While the main focus of commentary and scepticism was over whether Abu Bakr al Baghdadi had really died, in the way so graphically and poetically described by Donald Trump, inconsistencies and peculiarities surrounding the existence and destruction of the house went largely unnoticed.

And there were many! The first report from Al Jazeera, who had a local correspondent walking over the bombed site the following morning, conveniently identified its location near the village of Barisha in a “zoom-in” from Google’s satellite map, and the map displayed in their report was the same as the one that came up when I found it in a search on the 30th October. Inexplicably at the time, the house appeared to have already been destroyed!

Perhaps this also confused Al Jazeera, as they had identified one of the neighbouring houses as the “suspected compound” hit in the strike, despite this house being clearly visible in the video report from Alaa Eddine Youssef which followed.

This was before the Pentagon released drone footage of the operation and video of the subsequent airstrike, and before local scavengers and militants had removed material and altered the site’s appearance.

There were two possibilities to explain the aberrant Google satellite image, which showed a partly built or partly destroyed building as well as what appeared to be a large crater.

The image accredited to Maxar Technologies 2019 could have predated the construction of the house, or post-dated its destruction, with the latter option obviously giving the lie to US claims they had just launched the operation and that Al Baghdadi had only recently arrived there.

Given the appearance of the bombed site and the unconvincing and changing story from the White House, I chose to investigate this “conspiracy” option, postulating that the house shown in other satellite images in the media and in the Pentagon videos had been targeted months earlier, and the site then covered with loads of broken concrete and stone.

Examining details in other areas of Syria demonstrated that the current Google satellite photo was taken later than mid-2017, and I assumed that the house must have been older than that.

Wrong assumption! On the verge of submitting this contentious claim, I noticed that one of the satellite images used in the media showing Abu Mohammed Al Halabi’s house also showed foundations of a new house nearby that didn’t appear in the currently available image on Google maps.

Reports from different media sources had variously claimed that Al Halabi – a commander with the Hurras al Din terrorist group – had bought the house two years ago, or sold it, or that the house had been built only two years ago.

Only at that point did I discover that “historic” satellite images can be viewed on Google Earth – but only on the downloaded desktop version and not on Google Chrome. Below is a composite of images from 2016, when none of the current buildings was present, up to the latest available there dating from September last year, when Al Halabi’s house was newly completed.

The current satellite image on Google dates to January 2018, when excavations and preparations were being made. At the bottom right is an image from the Independent’s article of 28th October, supplied by Maxar but curiously printed upside down, in common with images displayed in other mainstream media reports.

The foundations of a new house not visible in the image from September 2018, of which the walls now appear completed in current photographs, suggest the Independent’s image is from mid-2019.

IMAGE: Satellite images 2016 to 2019, W Barisha.

In the Al Jazeera report, Youssef states that the house was owned by Abu Mohammed al Halabi (“the Aleppan”), but that “he was not the target”. This implies that he might well have been the target – and for good reason; Al Halabi had a long dubious record of association with Hurras Al Din, an extreme Salafist group closely allied to Da’esh, and one which the US claims to have been targeting.

In recent months the US has launched a number of such strikes in Western Syria targeting members of Hurras Al Din, including a recent one in a town not far from Barisha.

Abu Mohammed al Halabi, the nom de guerre of Mohammed Salama, who was notorious in Aleppo as a “trader and smuggler”, was also well known as a fighter and commander from back in 2014, when Liz Sly of the Washington Post wrote about his activities around the Turkish border crossing of Azaz, and his allegiance to Al Qaeda.

At that time rival armed groups fought for control of this important point, which was a main supply route for “rebel-occupied” Aleppo.

Bel Trew writing in the Independent also provides much detail on the circumstances and nature of Mohammed al Halabi’s relationship with Baghdadi, which sounds feasible but cannot be easily verified.

More to the point is the degree of cooperation between Turkish intelligence and these extremist groups, indicated by the evident freedom with which fighters could pass over the border crossing at Azaz, but also the crossing at Bab al Hawa – which coincidentally lies very close to where Al Halabi built his house last year.

On one particularly notable occasion in late 2016, Turkey facilitated the transport of bus-loads of Al Qaeda fighters out of Syria at Bab al Hawa and back in through the Azaz crossing, where they went to provide support to the besieged insurgents in East Aleppo.

Turkey’s support for various militant groups in NW Syria is hardly a secret, nor its early cooperation with the US in acting as a staging post for fighters and weapons from North Africa and elsewhere. Not to mention the long covert cooperation with IS in the oil-smuggling trade out of Eastern Syria.

So we might greet with some scepticism Erdogan’s announcement that several members of Abu Bakr al Baghdadi’s family have just been detained in Azaz. One wonders if they may have been living there since the newly formed ISIL took over that section of the Turkish border in late 2013!

While this historic collaboration between Turkey and the US/CIA in assisting terrorist groups in Syria including Al Qaeda and Da’esh may appear to be currently faltering over the Kurdish question, their collaboration must go deeper than this, and a joint operation to “kill Baghdadi” must be considered feasible. But as with Bin Laden, the object of killing the terrorist group leader was not because he personally presented any further danger; confecting his death would achieve the same objectives.

Those objectives must be seen as the opposite of what they appear; rather than sealing the end of Baghdadi’s caliphate they allow it to be reborn under a different leader and with a different form.

Just as Al Qaeda needed to die so that ISIS could be born from its ashes, so Baghdadi’s ISIS now needed to die so that its replacement – even under the same name – can provide the necessary Trojan Horse for the renewed war – on Iran.

Mention of the “Khorasan” group in this context is worrying, as Khorasan is a region northeast of Tehran from where its leaders are presumed to come.

Having thus provided a rationale for the staging of a strike to kill Baghdadi, whose timing and actual target were not of primary importance, we may view the images of Al Halabi’s destroyed house without prejudice.

Immediately it can be seen that the site does NOT look like that of a house that was bombed only the previous night. In fact it doesn’t look much like the site of a bombed house at all!

IMAGE: Two bombed houses in Idlib.

One of the things which sticks in the mind from the innumerable images of bombed buildings in Syria we have seen for the last eight years is the persistence of reinforced concrete slabs, such as would have formed the roof of Al Halabi’s house. The absence of any such slabs or visible fragments of that roof is remarkable by itself. Instead, in the area where the house stood is what appears to be a pile of pulverised and flattened material, surrounded by piles of rubble.

A close study and comparison of images of the remains of Mohammed Al Halabi’s house published in various different media on the 29th and 30th October reveals some strikingly aberrant features that make it impossible to believe the Pentagon’s – and the White House’s claim that the strike was carried out on the previous night.

In the images below I have circled two piles of stone and concrete rubble which do not appear to have come from the house as a result of the explosion following the US airstrike.

While the blast appears to have knocked over the perimeter wall quite cleanly on the south and west sides, there is simply no explanation for the presence of a large mound of rubble in that south-west corner of the compound, marked ‘1’. If its origin was Al Halabi’s house, then it was pushed there with heavy machinery.

IMAGE: Halabi house east and west view, annotated.

The second marked pile of rubble might have come from the garage beside the gates into the compound, whose angled broken roof slabs can be seen there, but it lies on the house side of where the building stood, and beside a small but living olive tree. By contrast, there are charred remains of two smaller buildings on the east side which look recent, as well as a large area of blackened olive trees extending from the north side of the compound towards a neighbouring house.

In initial reports of the bombing, shaky video of a fire and some small explosions taken from Barisha village were shown, and we might assume this was the result.

The exact position of these rubble heaps in relation to the house can be seen in the composite image below, where I have aligned and superimposed the walls of the compound visible in the Pentagon’s drone image with the line of the walls still clearly visible in a drone image of the site taken following the announcement of the bombing.

The Pentagon image immediately preceded the bombing of the building, which was hit first at the point indicated by a purple cross, towards the south west corner of the roof.

IMAGE: Drone view w/house superimposed, annotated.

Other features visible more clearly in this view are the small truck – which appears to have been pushed over to the wall, and behind rubble heap ‘1’, and the outlines of the basement or “tunnel” entrance, which lay beneath the building’s tower section and the circular pad in front of it.

As is so often the case where false claims are made, it only takes one clearly observable fault to demolish the whole case; if one tip-truck load of rubble is where it shouldn’t be, why not the whole site? And why not the whole story?

The word “cover-up” springs to mind, and it will take more than a few truck-loads of concrete rubble to cover up the crimes committed by the Western allies and their proxies in Syria.

Postscript

Following the publication of this article, I thought to search out different photos and video of the site that would confirm the claim about the give-away pile of rubble marked ‘1’.

A drone video taken by the Turkish Anadolu Agency provided not just that confirmation but also some seriously convincing evidence the site had been subject to major alterations with heavy machinery since it was bombed.

This video also provides an excellent view of the area and neighbouring houses, as well as high-definition shots of significant features and artefacts, which are included in the composite image below.

IMAGE: Overhead drone view of house site with enlargements. Anadolu Agency.

Apart from the rubble pile next to the wrecked truck, the most striking features here are tracks and marks left by excavating and earthmoving equipment. Tooth marks from an excavator bucket are clearly visible in the bare brown soil near the western wall, in a place not subsequently covered with crushed stone, marked ‘3’, and in several other places. (3a and 3b)

And on the east side of the platform where the house stood is an area in which chevron pattern wheel tracks are visible in the exposed ground, marked ‘4’. There are also what look like scratch marks on the eastern side of the raised platform where the house stood.

This video seems to confirm the general appearance of the site – namely that the remains of the house following the bombing have been pushed outwards into the series of heaps around the periphery, with the site subsequently covered with new material and bulldozed flat. Other heaps of rubble, including the previously noted piles ‘1’ and ‘2’, appear to have come from elsewhere.

Pile ‘2’ is not just in a place where there was no wall, but has a brownish appearance as if stained by the local brown soil. There are also heaps of rubble that appear to have been dumped over the cellar/basement area, and not appearing simply as parts of the collapsed house.

But there is another feature in these images which puts the veracity of the “conspiracy theory” beyond reasonable doubt, illustrated in the area marked ‘1a’ in the enlarged section of the south-west corner.

This is the only area within the boundary wall which has been neither covered over nor excavated, and it can be seen to be coated with grey dust.

Its appearance is similar to the fallen wall, which appears to have been pushed over evenly by the blast from the bombing and also coated with grey dust. It can also be seen that the large area of olive trees to the north of the house has not been burnt as previously thought, but is also covered in grey dust.

The contrast with the heavily trafficked and whitened house platform is stark, once you become aware of it.

And finally as noted before, the absence of large slabs of concrete from the roof remains inexplicable – were the White House’s story to be true. But of course it isn’t.

The true story of what happened – who was targeted and who survived – is obviously known to those who carried it out, but probably not Mr Trump.

Like most people who imbibe the Imperial media’s Cool-Aid, he never quite got the idea that defeating ISIS and killing its leader wasn’t the US objective.

Brilliant Bullet point, analytical Journalism, David, a huge compliment:
and I particularly loved this simplicity:-

” … and beside a small but living olive tree. By contrast,” Erdogan’s ‘Olive Branch Operation’ was entirely duplicitous & multi-functional financially, from a full on Military perspective, with all warring parties of Terror, playing all sides, whilst quashing or extinguishing any mainstream-media resistance &, let’s just say that the deaths of Jackie Sutton & Serena Shim were way more than suspicious, (long before Kashoggi). Real reporters & linguists, regardless of nationality, have been entirely intimidated, families detained, or journalists just plain murdered: and dare you mention or video those Turkish Trucks marked NGO Aid, then your life expectancy is severely reduced, man or woman, ‘Business As Usual’, with a Billion Dollar Palace as reward for Erdogan’s NATZO role & who knows, maybe a membership of the EU, as a bonus ? 😉 ! Johnny Mac’ innit’, “… you cannot BE serious’, ffs, Bonnie & Clyde were so sweet in comparison: meanwhile, we get the Guardian’s dog Chulov chewing over convoys of tankers stretching over the horizon and from low level space satellites, unlike Udo Ulfkotte, who saw light at the end of rainbow distraction … like it wasn’t ever obvious !

I mean, you really can’t make this stuff up, Erdogan’s son and the ISIS oil business and all the EU & FUKUS & Russian & Chinese Arms companies profiting massively from all this: it’s so obviously business as usual for the M.I.C. , with or without the terror element for touching fairy tale versions of events warranting more armaments: both the tabloids & government budgets, way out of rational control.

Ahrar Al-SHAM, sums it up, utterly pathetic mime, no words really needed any more,( just checking governmental debts in relation to GDP, to see who can afford this insane recipe that defines tinlickin’ gunrunners of self-immolation, highlighted by Gaytandzhieva ), and their ‘debris & hubris’, in the form of Refugees & Mass Migration to dilute cultures & families & resistance & Control of Knowledge, via Secret Service Deep State Controllers, with Corporate Backers: Comey & Co.- Ops. still need to be legally defined & prosecuted and it will be The Treason Trial that tops ‘Watergate’, in terms of true historic significance, in every sense, mutual-national Treason over state finances, with state funding.

The Media War Machine’s Big Business Fascist Corporate Computerised dictatorship,
over sovereign cultures. As Assange highlights . . .

Again David: thanks for more Brilliant journalism, for what it is worth, well ‘Worth it’.

Just like it’s worth knowing that the last time I looked it up, Russia was running a mere 13.6% government debt ratio, in relation to GDP . . . and now we have Ms. Lagarde telling all of Europe finally, to increase public spending on top of massively higher and out of control debt ratios, way higher than Russia, already: slaves to IMF & EU mercenary war politics is our new reality of self-destruction, founded on lies.
Well, Bullet in my chest, I got rhymes in my vest… the targets are in range and the National Security State Departments in the West, don’t need a goddamn cent more, until they start accounting for what is missing and have answered many many questions in court, including ‘Parallel Platfotms’ & was it really ‘worth it’, weaponising our weather, accelerating Climate Change & becoming a sociopathic fascist deep state manipulator of Financial Computerised Treason & Media Charades for private corporate militaristic agendas, under 5iFUKUS Corporate Computerised Surveillance States for global control ?

Short of an immediate change in Media Laws >>> Doomed from dumbing down, is our fate . . .
Because we ignored all the warnings from people like Assange, Binney & Wiebe, after the WTC7 conspiracy and ‘Phoney New Pearl Harbour & War On Terror’, created & financed by our very own National Security States, ramping surveillance states thereafter, with unlimited budgets & wholly unaccountable people dictating & governing sovereign nations over & above any Politician’s head.

The capacity of private citizens to review material like this is astounding, thanks for taking the time. The US aims and rationales provided to Congress and the public never seem to be the real ones. This is a democracy?

You can read a lot into any photograph. Take the one at the top of the article, for example. It shows a bunch of guys posing at a conference table covered with a confusion of notebook computers, three ring binders, wireline phones and network patch cables (plus the odd coaster). Its meant to convey ‘authority’ but to anyone who’s been in such meetings it just looks dated and out of touch. The incident itself was just Trump’s “Osama bin Laden” moment, it was just another lame attempt to one-up Obama. The actual facts about what happened on the ground, casualties and so on are irrelevant, for all I know it was just a “Wag the Dog” moment done by a low budget production company. (Real people being hurt? Real lives destroyed? Do they really care?)

(PS — For anyone who doesn’t know what “Wag the Dog” is, its a movie made in the late 90s. Worth viewing, its an lesson in the manufacture of fake news to support a false narrative needed for domestic political consumption. Its one of those movies that stay with you…..and you’ll never look at a bad of Doritos corn chips in quite the same light again.)

I do not believe Abu Bakr al Baghdadi was ever a real person. All I have to say about the episode of his “killing”, I have said, or more precisely drawn, here

Looking at the image instills a painful hunch.
Human evolution was a waste.

It did not have to be this way and surely didn’t
happen over night.

Is mankind in trouble, or what?

Mankind is infested with parasites. Remove those parasites before judging the condition of Mankind.

It would be so easy, if it would be that easy.
Homo Sapiens has allowed and at many times
only created the circumstances and now even
the parasites.
How can someone be seen that creates his/her
own pest?

Jack_Garbo

Humans cannot be a “waste” because evolution has no purpose, no goal. It just is. Ha, it’s not even that, it’s a concept. The human animal is unique perhaps in its high intelligence and conceptualization, but otherwise it’s just another critter, nasty as a baboon or chimp, who’ll rip off your head, not as nice as a bonobo, who’ll blow you for a banana, and weaker than a hyena, whose sex is almost impossible to tell. A human, male, female, in many gradations.

nottheonly1

because evolution has no purpose, no goal.

You will surely see that this is a tricky statement, since it is Homo Sapiens
who describes the circumstances of his/her/its own coming about and the
nature of evolution, that is effecting and affecting him, as if the description
he/she came up with are already present in existence.

Humans are a waste in the way I attempted to peel out. They are of course
not a waste as a random occurrence of a life form in a cluster of galaxies
that includes what the evolver himself/herself describes as ‘Milky Way’.

The resource expended for the species were a waste – considering the outcome
for the examples in the picture of the war criminal war men.
