Does the Global Temperature Record REALLY Show a ‘Climate Emergency’?

We are choosing to re-publish this article, first published by Watts Up With That a couple of years ago, because it can teach a couple important lessons on the way the media covers “climate change”, and indeed the way to analyze data and statistics in general.

As the Great Reset progresses, both climate and data literacy are going to be indispensable tools.

*

PRO: Official Government Data Shows an Alarming Rapid Rise in Temperature Over 140 years

NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) is the original organization to raise the warning on global temperature increases, due to increasing carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere, during an address to the U.S. Senate by Dr. James Hansen in June 1988[1].

NASA GISS maintains a website where the data and graphs derived from that data are publicly available. They say:

The GISS Surface Temperature Analysis ver. 4 (GISTEMP v4) is an estimate of global surface temperature change. Graphs and tables are updated around the middle of every month using current data files from NOAA GHCN v4 (meteorological stations) and ERSST v5 (ocean areas), combined as described in our publications Hansen et al. (2010) and Lenssen et al. (2019). These updated files incorporate reports for the previous month and also late reports and corrections for earlier months.

They offer a graph of global temperature for each year from 1880 to the present as seen below.

Figure 1. Land-ocean temperature index, 1880 to present, with base period 1951-1980. The solid black line is the global annual mean and the solid red line is the five-year lowess smooth. The gray shading represents the total (LSAT and SST) annual uncertainty at a 95% confidence interval and is available for download. [More information on the updated uncertainty model can be found here: Lenssen et al. (2019).]

This particular graph (Figure 1) is the most cited and referenced graph of its kind in the world, depicting a sharp rise in global temperature over the 140 years from 1880 to 2020. It shows that we are in a runaway warming trend that constitutes a “climate emergency”.

Media outlets understand and have adopted the term “climate emergency” and use it more frequently in headlines. In a 2019 article, seen below, they use data from NASA GISS to inform their readers.

Headline from the Guardian Newspaper, 15 Jan 2020

The average temperature in 2019 was about 1.1C above the average from 1850-1900, before large-scale fossil fuel burning began. The world’s scientists have warned that global heating beyond 1.5C will significantly worsen extreme weather and suffering for hundreds of millions of people.Source: The Guardian

Figure 2. NASA GISS global temperature anomaly data plotted by the Guardian newspaper 15 Jan 2020

The term “climate emergency” has seen a surge in use ever since its awareness grew after being used by the media to describe what appears to be a rapid global temperature rise.

From Wikipedia:

Oxford Dictionary chose climate emergency as the word of the year 2019 and defines the term as “a situation in which urgent action is required to reduce or halt climate change and avoid potentially irreversible environmental damage resulting from it.” Usage of the term soared more than 10,000% between September 2018 and September 2019.
Source: Wikipedia

The steep slope of the graph makes clear that Earth’s temperature is rising so quickly that it constitutes an emergency requiring immediate action.

CON: The widely cited NASA global temperature graph is highly magnified and visually misleading

Note that the Guardian article cites:

The average temperature in 2019 was about 1.1C above the average from 1850-1900, before large-scale fossil fuel burning began.”

The entire graph and temperature data set from NASA GISS is displaying just the small change of 1.1°C of temperature, which is highly magnified to show the trend. Because this small temperature change is magnified, it gives the false impression of having a steep rising slope. For the unobservant, that steep slope looks like a dangerous trend that would constitute a “climate emergency”.

Note the two graphs below. Figure 3 shows how global warming is depicted in the media from NASA GISS data (such as seen above in the Guardian article), plotting a narrow temperature range to show a magnified graph.

Figure 3. (click to enlarge). NASA GISS Global Land-ocean temperature anomaly index, 1880 to present, with base period 1951-1980 (source data)

Figure 4 below shows the exact same data when plotted on the scale of human temperature experience, such as the range of temperature we experience yearly from winter to summer. This is done by removing the anomaly calculation from the GISS data, using the agreed upon baseline temperature:

For the global mean, the most trusted models produce a value of roughly 14°C, i.e. 57.2°F
Source: NASA

Simply using an Excel Spreadsheet allows us to add that 57.2°F temperature back to the NASA GISS anomaly data value. You can download and examine the spreadsheet here for yourself [Download]

The result of that process gives you Figure 4:

Figure 4 (click to enlarge). NASA GISS Global Land-ocean temperature anomaly index, 1880 to present, with base period 1951-1980 plotted on the scale of human temperature experience such as the range of temperature we experience yearly from winter to summer (source data). Data converted back to original absolute temperature values using Excel.

Figure 4 shows a slow, and gradual temperature rise in actual absolute temperatures over the last 140 years. The difference with figure 1 is striking, and doesn’t look alarming at all.

If you were presented figure 4 as proof of an impending “climate emergency” would it be as concerning as figure 3 or the NASA GISS graph commonly cited in the media?

In the article Lessons on How to Lie with Statistics by Will Koehrsen Jul 28, 2019 he makes the following point:

How to Lie With Statistics[2]is a 65-year-old book that can be read in an hour and will teach you more practical information you can use every day than any book on “big data” or “deep learning.”

Always Look at the Axes on a Chart

Adjusting the axes of a graph to make a point is a classic technique in manipulating charts. As a first principle, the y-axis on a bar chart should always start at 0. If not, it’s easy to prove an argument by manipulating the range, by for example, turning minor increases into massive changes.

– Source:Towards Data Science

Figure 6 Interest rates plotted on different scales. Graphs by Will Koehrsen

Just like in the GISS temperature graph that uses a non-zero starting point for the Y-axis, the first figure 6 graph on the left suggests interest rates are rising dramatically. But, when plotted in the full context of the data, on the right, the rise in interest rates does not look concerning at all.

The same misleading process is on display with NASA GISS temperature graph comparison in figures 3 and 4.

Magnified and scary looking temperature data aside, many scientists don’t believe we have a “climate emergency” at all even though high-schooler Greta Thunberg is impassioned enough to present her concerns to the United Nations[3].

But some 500 scholars[4] and scientists say there’s no “climate emergency” at all.

On the [same day] that Greta Thunberg made an impassioned speech to the United Nations about her fears of a climate emergency, a group of 500 prominent scientists and professionals, led by the CLINTEL co-founder Guus Berkhout, sent this registered letter to the United Nations Secretary-General stating that there is no climate emergency and climate policies should be designed to benefit the lives of people. Here’s the press release, here’ the list of 500 signees.

Source: aei.org

Clearly, the global temperature data does not support the idea of a “climate emergency”, because when you view it on the proper scale of normal human experience, the steep rise in temperature disappears. And clearly, 500 knowledgeable people of science say there’s no need to worry.

If only global warming were true as we would then consume less so called fossil fuel anyway so it would be a win win. Throughout history more people have died from cold than heat, an unarguably fact. The term fossil fuel is also incorrect as coal, from fossilised wood, is the only one. Oil is abiotic and will never run out ( research peak oil predictions that are and have been all wrong) and gas is a natural product of nature just like your farts .Its really not a problem. I just wish we could have a lot more summers of ’76.

I live in New Zealand. My eldest brother was a member of the IPCC group that were jointly awarded the Nobel “peace” Prize for reporting on climate change. He is a confirmed believer in climate change.

This year about a week ago it snowed in New Zealand down to 600m altitude. That is summer snow. First time in my 67 year life.

I am still a skeptic. If the climate is changing and there is good evidence this may be the case the conclusion that it is due to greenhouse gases is still hypothesis, not yet even deserving the term theory, let alone fact.

My current conclusion is that land management is probably more significant than greenhouse gases, to atmospheric warming. The sun heats a road more than it heats a desert, more than it heats a forest. It is the reflected heat that greenhouse gases trap.

Isn’t there an inconsistency with the measurement techniques in the graph(s) over the time span given on the X axis? If the most recent measurements are gathered by Goddard/NASA via satellite, how can that data be accurately compared with the data from the many decades prior to the satellite era depicted in the graph? Apologies if I missed the explanation for this in the article.

The comparisons are based on the interpretations of climate scientists, often fed into various computer models, which many argue leaves too much room for interpretation to be very reliable or meaningful at this point. A2

Whether global-warming or climate-change is a ‘thing-to-fear’ or not will remain contentious for a while yet.
My little bird-brain suggests that humans as a species appear to be a little too-o-o-o-o successful, and over-production coupled with habitat destruction should surely present, points to ponder.
I just dread the thought of captains of big-biz and banksters constantly and consistently blabbing about the need for economic stimulation, the ‘gimme-gimme-gimme’ psychosis. We as a species, already produce too much, spend too much, waste too much, eat too much, etc. etc. So, isn’t it about time we slowed-down with consumption-excesses? One just needs to spend a little time at any major international airport, or observe motorized-traffic for a brief moment, to resolve that ‘we’ cannot continue at this frenetic pace and remain unscathed environmentally.

Altering the Y axis is all about removing context, they also do this by altering, or removing context from history.

If everyone knew 5000 yrs ago the tree line in the Northern extremes was 100km farther North, with much wider growth rings than todays trees indicating it was much warmer back then, caused by natural climate processes, the AGW scam would be laughed at.

Old but gold:
https://archive.org/download/michael-crichton-speeches/Michael%20Crichton_%20The%20Case%20For%20Scepticism%20On%20Global%20Warming.pdf

Crichton mentions these graphics, “Mann’s stick”, changing data (actual forgery?) on GISS website and many other ways to manipulate people’s minds.
Have anything changed in these 20+ years, except rebranding “global warming” to “climate change” and propping up propaganda further?
Does any climate alarmist confess that all their predictions are based on “models”? Have contemporary models shown “some more skill” than these from 20 years ago?
Too many questions and still no answers.

Forget about the numbers. Just look at the action – not a SINGLE country on earth has a) met their climate change targets (SDGs) or b) honored their public commitments (including at UN summits) to fund climate change. Not one. Not a single one. Not even the wokest and wealthiest of them all have done this.

On top of that, even the “greenest” nations such as Sweden and Germany have CUT their climate change budgets this year. If you think (human caused) climate change is real, you are literally on your own.

I think we humans should try to minimize our impact on the environment, but let’s not kill ourselves in the process. The AGW movement became political with manipulation of data, scare tactics, and claims that never materialized. We still have polar bears and north and south poles, etc.

Also the wind turbines and solar panels don’t come without environmental impact which, I think, will be significant in 20 years when they begin to fail.

And, if is the significant threat to humanity that is forcing us to go green no matter the impact to our lives, why do we give China and India a pass to reduce their carbon footprint.

It just seems too political and aligns with global governance control to make me feel that we are not being manipulated once again.

My insurance went up yearly for living near the sea when I was U.K based as according to the 1000 pages of small print I (my home) was at risk.
slowly surely this is pushing us financially into a situation in where buying or renting or transport will be decided on how much it costs to be covered
small example….
The trains and bus;s now do a huge discount for app users – tap on tap off whilst marginalizing thoses who pay with cash by doing the same thing as the insurance underwriters who punish thoses who live near what they deem is a high risk area or not doing the carbon dance and they /we will need to pay more much more.
By using tap on tap off your saving the planet buy going paperless. That is the selling point.

They managed to dig whole of the U>K up when I was there yet the same councils say they havent got the money to pay for xyz.
2nd part of the infrastructure is now happening with more digging to add the fibreoptic cabling and the roads driving is an nightmare.
It seems awfully deliberate all theses roadworks to the point of making driving a pain.
increasing insurances and tax and petrol and electric/gas fuel.

There is also manipulation of the data on a grand scale, from moving temperature reading stations to warmer areas within a country, to falsifying data on publishing, to actually manipulating the weather with high tech which has long been planned as means of warfare and coercing countries to toe the line of the misanthropic puppet masters – see “Owning the Weather in 2025”, DoD research paper, etc.

The climate scare is a myth, and the only thing we need to fear but nevertheless mount resistance against are those who want to reduce the human population.

Its all perception, but what is real is the carbon from coal generated electricity dropping onto the polar ice and causing that slow melting process to lower the glacier ice and raise the ocean water.

And the atm is growing for some reason, producing bigger storms as we “grow the economy” into these areas most affected by the bigger storms.

Back in the early 80’s there was a TV documentary about global warming in which they showed a Chinese map of the arctic circle in around 500 A.D. and there was no ice anywhere in the entire arctic circle. They concluded that “Global Warming” is a natural phenomenon that happens about once every two or three thousand years. But that documentary has been forever disappeared from existence by people who have figured out ways to make money off of the “Global Warming” scam.

On social media there has been a lot of discussion in the last year about the political theory of a war between two rival elite factions of the American establishment since the 1950s known as “The Yankee and Cowboy War.” Ex-member of the Trump admin, Mike Benz, has been leading the conversation on X with his many documented expositions on the “censorship industry” as part of that war.

The following tells the history of the Cowboy and Yankee War and how they merged to become the Uniparty of today, and their war against the neo-Cowboy Trump movement. See: The Uniparty and Cowboy War

Virology is not and has never been a science. It has never employed repeatable, falsifiable experiments which feature independent variables. Not so with climate science, which dates back to the mid 19th century, and is based upon thermodynamics and fluid mechanics/gas dynamics. Those go back centuries if not more.

Your variables in the weather equation are simply too many and too big.

Its impossible to calculate anything serious about the weather more than 1-2 weeks ahead.

You surely must see the propagandist pseudoscience involved in plotting just THREE alleged warming cycles out of the thousands of interconnecting short and long warming/cooling cycles there have been – and comparing them with a totally HYPOTHETICAL 8.5deg current warming, based on the totally UNFOUNDED concept of positive feedback loops.

It’s such garbage I can’t believe you really think it has any value.

As I already pointed out to you the Medieval Warm Period was warmer than now and the Little Ice Age developed out of it in less than a century – possibly just a few decades.

So in very recent times it both warmed and cooled faster than now

Unlike your ridiculous graph this ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

Do you have anything real?

Apart from the raison d’etre of sceptical science (and of climate science as a whole) bringing impartiality into question, isn’t it also the case that projected global temperature is only 0.2 degrees hotter than the medieval warm period, at its hottest point? This 0.2 could well be within margin of error, couldn’t it, since we’re compensating for heat island effect (not an exact science), and we’re comparing modern readings to proxy data from 800 years ago? It just seems quite fragile evidence, to me.

I haven’t seen any real justification as to why ‘rate of increase’ is such a significant factor, either. Surely the significance of ‘rate of increase’ could only be known using comparison data of previous warming events? But do we have this data? Mean global temperature 800 years ago derived from proxy data isn’t going to track an 80 year period with any accuracy or resolution, surely? There will at least be a large margin for error. It could be that the Medieval Warm Period was punctuated or sudden, and some rises were just as steep as now (ie. not that steep) or even steeper.

Other than various assumptions that ‘steep = bad’, how steep is too steep?

I’ll look more into the paper, but I just wonder, is it strong enough evidence to be so dogmatic? A2

Globally that is not the case. The current global mean temp is about a degree C warmer than the average during the medieval warm period. See graph at that paper. A change of even one degree C in the global average is a big deal. A rapid rate of increase means insufficient time for plants and animals (non human ones) to adapt to the changes, and this would include food crops. The proxies for data going back several thousand years are actually pretty precise.

CO2 is currently 0.04% of the atmosphere.
If it drops below 0.02% plant life cannot survive.
Considering the CC agenda, your concern for plant life is something of a paradox..

I switched from ‘basic’ view to ‘intermediary’ view and took a look at the “Global mean land+ocean” graph on that site. In terms of peaks (and rate of increase is the significant part, we are told, therefore peaks are significant), there is much less than 1 degree C difference.

A change of even one degree C in the global average is a big deal.

Says who, though? The CC lobby? Many feel this is based on a dated, Darwinesque, static-world model, rooted in fear and which, in a prime case of double think, seems to be acknowledged as both true and false using CC logic.

It does leave me very confused. A2

As a graphic artist spending over 20 years creating information graphics for public meeting use, i can confirm, it’s way too easy to magnify and manipulate information. If the graph or chart is not approached from a highly objective rather than subjective point of view, the graphic is just propaganda. Frame of reference is vital. For instance, in this circumstance, what about displaying millions of years of global temperature? The fact is that at this point in time, Earth is well below median temp in a cool period. At the graph i pulled here we can see the only frightening data are the projected future temps. The Arctic and what is now northern Canada had tropical flora and Mastadons and all manner of life in the hothouse periods.

As we can see the idiots are already bailing on GR bullshit because these ideas won’t work executed by greedy 1% and centralized corporate control. Voluntary population attrition, regional relocalization, abolition of war empire, universal rooftop solar, and basically a move to slow, conscious, egalitarian localized consent based self-governing and tax-caging any million+ rich, plus much more, can create an adult human future.

Hi Sandy,
Have you ever seen the book “Graphis Diagrams, The Graphic Visualization of Abstract Data”?
It was my memory of that amazing book that provoked outrage in me every time I saw an msm news anchor desk with a backdrop consisting only of giant red spikey spots, labelled with large, bold numbers, hovering ominously over cities across the country and throughout the world.
My mind kept automatically adjusting the misinfographics to the reality that, if all the variously sized, giant, threatening, enumerated red blobs had, instead, been coloured green, representing the entire population of each city, with red blobs representing the afflicted, superimposed upon them, to scale, the red blobs would be more like red pinprick dots if they could even be discerned at all among the vast, overwhelming majority of healthy, non-afflicted individuals.

As well as Visual Communication on equal pairing with Verbal Communication. This way, no one would be fooled by the everyday pile of bull-crap thrown at us by the ruling elite. This is happening organically now as people see thru the last 40+ years of the elite selling us out into serfdom by controlling what we know and debate.

People have been concerned about environmental despoilation and resource depletion since the 19th century. Its a real issue and its made more pressing because there’s a lot more us humans and instead of confining our destructive activities to the general area of our cities our reach is everywhere. That said, its also encouraging to note that if we stop being destructive then things recover quite quickly. It might not be perfect but its a hopeful sign.

Where contemporary movements go wrong is that they’re typically corporate shorthand for “selling the rubes a lot less product for a lot more money”. This is the kind of greenness that’s worth investing in but because of the way it affects people (not to mention the continual guilt tripping) it promotes an atmosphere of cynicism. There’s also a lot of issues with science, or rather a lack of understanding of it. Its rather painful to hear people blather on about ‘zero-carbon’ without really understanding what they’re talking about. This makes it difficult to propose viable solutions because of the wall of absolutist nonsense that drags on any proposal. (This is what you get when you train millions in the art of ‘communications’ and law but fail to teach them science…..)

I am an agnostic on global warming/climate hysteria as I have never done my own research or collected my own evidence. I have plenty of other science to investigate and time is short.
That said – the author stating that graphs should start at 0degF is wrong. Why not 0 Kelvin? In truth a small change in average environmental temp is quite profound. In covering all life processes it would be even more obvious. Try altering your heating thermostat by 1-2 deg in winter.

Yes, a graph showing the difference between the incidence of chemtrails in the 19th century and the 21st would be very interesting indeed and would need no exaggerating. I suppose they could introduce a minus vector to inaggerate (yeh, slick eh) the difference and draw comparisons with financial debt to muddy the water. Actually, I fear that most people would accept it without pausing to think that you can’t have less than nothing of what exists in the physical world.
