Jesus’ Face on a Potato

Todd Hayen

You’ve all heard tales of the face of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, the Pope, or maybe even Trump, showing up on the surface of a potato, on a burnt piece of toast, or even a kumquat or some other odd fruit, implying their likeness.

Then, when you actually see such a manifestation, you wonder how in the hell anyone could mistake some weird burn mark, growth malformity, or whatnot for the face of any human, let alone Jesus, Mary, or Trump.

But there ‘ya have it. People love to manufacture reality from non-reality. And they do this with little provocation. If the potato has some sort of malformation, it is easy enough to push that into looking like a nose, a mouth, a cheek, then voila, it’s Jesus!! (or Trump!) They aren’t lying when they tell you that is what they see. They honestly see it. They would stake their life on it.

Sometimes, you may see it, too. Especially if they explain it, “See how this part of the potato turns up, and this little black mark here makes that turn up look like a nose,” “Oh yeah,” you might say, “It does look like a nose.” The more information you get about how the potato should look like something in particular, the more you are apt to believe it, and then see it the same way the person explaining it sees it.

Particularly if you like the person who first shows it to you. And most certainly if that person is in the “mainstream,” or has a whole gaggle of folks around them who see Jesus’ face on the potato as well.

All of us are familiar with the Solomon Asch Conformity Line Experiment Study, which consisted of “experiments by Solomon Asch designed to investigate how social pressure from a majority group could influence an individual to conform.” These experiments have been referenced again and again in an effort to show what is probably happening in the world today.

The “group” that influences all others to see the world a particular way is the “mainstream” group—the massive group of people who swear by whatever narrative is being blabbed out by mainstream media. We, on the other side of this, continually wonder why the mainstream is consistently blabbering out untruths, lies and “non-facts.”

Of course, the irony of all this is that the side believing the mainstream is saying that we are doing the same thing—following an alt-stream media that is blabbering lies, untruths, and “non-facts”!

Do you know how to tell the difference?

It’s easy, actually. We are willing to talk about it, but they are not. They are typically so full of rage, belligerent certainty, and virtuous superiority that they are totally unwilling to discuss anything. If an opposing idea comes up, they have no interest in hearing it, no curiosity as to why someone they had trusted, or even loved, as a friend or a family member, a child or a partner, thinks so differently than they do. All curiosity is lost, all empathy is lost. All that is kept is rage, hate, vitriol, and disengagement.

Shrews don’t do this (at least the ones I have met do not). We may be disappointed, even angry, but we are always willing to listen. Particularly with those who are important in our lives, we want to hear why they believe what they believe; we want to empathize with their anger and sadness, and we want to understand.

The irony here is that even that receptiveness is met with an untenable response: They seldom have anything to say when asked to speak, except something like “I can’t stand Trump, I hate him!” or “The vaccines save lives! They are safe and effective!” They don’t really want to tell you WHY they believe what they believe. That’s because they do not know.

Back to Jesus on the potato. Humans love to make up stories. In fact, the very way we perceive reality is through stories. We identify objects we encounter in life through a story, we define everything through a story. Think about it. If you see an apple sitting on the kitchen counter, how do you know it is an apple and how do you know what an apple is? You could say, “Through a previous experience.” That is true, but what is an experience? It is a story.

Can that story change? Sure it can. Can you have a story that is not formulated by a personal experience? Sure you can. In fact, most of our stories are not about things we empirically experienced. Most of them are told to us. There lies the problem. We either have to trust the messenger, or come up with ways other than through the messenger to vet the message.

This is where common sense and critical thinking comes in.

The source of the message is not as important as this. If you do trust the source, then you are fine to believe the message (within reason, of course). If you don’t know the source, and don’t really know if you can trust it, you have to come up with other ways to vet the information—through common sense, critical thinking, and deeper research.

If the source is the mainstream, and you believe and trust the mainstream, then you probably will fall into the subject of one of Solomon’s experiments.

The belief in the Jesus face on the potato is a different matter. The whole point of using this potato thing as an analogy is to say that nearly anything, anywhere, can be made to look like nearly anything, anywhere. If the observer who brings to your attention something they believe is a certain thing, it doesn’t really take that much to convince just about anyone that thing is what they say it is.

This works on both sides of this divide, and we have to be careful dealing with it. If people I trust on our side of the fence say something that is in alignment with other alternative views, I still have to be careful not to see something that isn’t really there. How? Use the same techniques we have used all along: primarily common sense and critical thinking.

Don’t fall into being the victim of Solomon’s group of influencers who can persuade the minority (you, as one person) that 2+2=5. Even if you trust them and believe everything they have said in the past (they may not try to influence you out of malice, but are in fact a true believer in the Jesus face on the potato).

Next time you fry an egg, be careful what you think you see. And avoid potatoes at all costs. A potato alone can never be trusted to give you important insight.

It is akin to rebuilding a house damaged by fire. To do it right, you have to tear out everything that was the least bit damaged. And it looks like a mess when you are doing that. Trash everywhere, piles of burnt-up debris, dumpsters full of garbage. The you build back, and it is beautiful.

Sure would be nice if that is what happens. Fingers crossed that is the intention, because if it is not, the mess never goes away.

Good that you are returning to this one point of difference between who you call shrews and who I call the normies: They don’t really want to tell you WHY they believe what they believe. That’s because they do not know. And they lack the get-up-and-go to even try to dig for the truth. That’s so infuriating. It’s okay to be wrong in your assessment of the truth after having given your search a real go but not to even try, just to lap it all up is not in line with our human potential IMO. And I can understand that there’s this meme going around about such people – the shrews – being mere NPCs.

Actually yes.
First, Cancer can be defined as a disease in which a group of abnormal cells grow uncontrollably by disregarding the normal rules of cell division [1] .
Second, “Verse No. 8, surat Al-Jumah” accurately defines cancer and determines its cause.
“Say to them, the death you try to flee from will meet you; then you will be conveyed back to him who knows the unseen and the witnessed. Then he will inform you of all that you have done”.

This is how mashed potato was invented. Images of Mo are forbidden. One day someone saw his likeness in a potato and in a fit of rage, pounded it with a rock until it was transformed into an irresistable, creamy delicacy.

the human mind needs to schematize perception, chunking a flood of sensations into manageable, familiar templates

we all definitely are born with those face-recognition templates, otherwise it would be pretty hard to tell our friends and family apart and avoid confusing them with total strangers, since, after all, how many of us could distinguish reliably among people we meet if we had to go only by the rest of their bodies? it would be like trying to figure out which of the pigeons in the park is the one that we saw earlier pooping on our windshield

similarly if we had to analyze every aspect of our lives from first principles, it would overload our circuits, so we instead fit our lives into seductively simple narrative frameworks, and delegate most of the thinking to herd leaders who we let influence us also because their personal characteristics match certain patterns we’re programmed to find trustworthy

the good aspect of this I guess is that these irrational projections can work in our favor when we encounter situations that our programming is primed to deal with successfully, but on the other hand, we are susceptible to manipulation via this mechanism, like the farm animals that fall in line and submit to the farmer’s will as a group once the key individuals have been subdued, possible with goats and horses, but not especially with more independent-minded species

I faked complicity in the hope I would survive, never got the jabs and never caught covid. To be honest, I think I’d caught it anyway in 2019 before it was trending. Fake complicity (like the boy at the end of the 2+2 film) is a way of surviving totalitarianism, so maybe the way of sneaking your non-complicit genes past the firing lines of history, thereby living to pass on the gene. Here too.The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love.

They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over.

The moment the Men who wanted to be left alone are forced to fight back, it is a form of suicide. They are literally killing off who they used to be. Which is why, when forced to take up violence, these Men who wanted to be left alone, fight with unholy vengeance against those who murdered their former lives.

They fight with raw hate, and a drive that cannot be fathomed by those who are merely play-acting at politics and terror.

RUE TERROR will arrive at these people’s door, and they will cry, scream, and beg for mercy… but it will fall upon the deaf ears of the Men who just wanted to be left alone.”

I was not aware of that conformity experiment but now I understand better the difficult “dialogs” with some other family members or friends. I was always surprised by the evident lack of logic of their arguments (when they bothered to give any) but now I realize that they belong to groups (co-workers, friends etc) while I don’t (from a very young age I tried to be on my own, staying away from any groups). The only time I felt a real communion with the people around me was at the church (of course, a brief one, for the mass duration) but for many years I stopped going. You only understand it the day you discover Christ on a personal level. Christ was and is precisely what was/is missing in the holy mass…and in the ancient Bible.

From me also a Thank for a much useful article to Mr. Hayen !

You’d better hope it doesn’t treat you like Lot then send you to Hell one day for traipsing round the throne the wrong way.

Thank you, Erik ! I have to admit that for me the religion had mostly the cultural dimension : the paintings, the music, the organ. Looking around me in the church, my only prayer was : “Lord, please help me believe in you as they do”. Not sure it was answered but I moved slowly away to the personal Christ, without an official form

I still use a variation of churches the cultural way from time to time. Catholic, protestant, JW, whatever comes the way.

I have one from Russell, the founder of JW which fits into the whole thing and which guided my way through the smug:

“Beware of ‘organisation‘. It is wholly unnecessary. The Bible rules will be the only rules you will need.
Do not seek to bind other’s consciences, and do not permit others to bind yours.
Believe and understand God’s Word to-day, and so continue growing in grace and knowledge and love day by day.” Russel.WT.sept 15,1895.

Very good! you learned that most important lesson: Religion and God have little to do with each other.

I don’t understand why it is so hard for people to see the catholic church for the mind fuck that it is…

I think a lot of us on this side of the divide were like that…just didn’t belong to groups, I was not in groups because I was a nerd, didn’t wash my hair every day, and it was very long, I was in the “outcast” group if anything (well, I wasn’t THAT distasteful! I did have a bunch of friends). But the popular kids shunned me.

It was not something I was happy about, far from it. I was sad most of the time, but I really never found a “group identity.”…things got better in college. I was more aware of what would make me ok in society, still didn’t join groups, but I was more popular, but not by a lot (I was a composer, after all, and they are typically weirdos).

Colin Wilson’s book, ‘The Outsider’ was/is a seminal work:

I read it about forty years ago and immediately recognised some of the characteristics in myself.

It wasn’t until I read Tony Atwood’s books many years later that l began to understand who and why l am:

Thank you for sharing. As a child I had only one “motto” when it came to the others : “better let them believe that you are crazy than stupid” so they left me alone. Of course that I had to prove various levels of craziness before they believed. About the “stupid” part, they were afraid of my sharp tongue and critics.

This important topic inspires a couple thoughts. First and foremost, who remembers when Father Guido Sarducca (Don Novello) hosted Saturday Night Live and offered his “Finda the Pope in the Pizza” Contest. (Wonder if anyone summoned a late night pizza from Domino’s?)

And please don’t forget that favorite toy Mr. Potato Head. Now that’s one potato I bet we can all see Trump’s head in. (Kinda makes you wish we had the real Mr. Potato Head for President of the US, doesn’t it?)

Somehow this topic brings to mind one of Ayn Rand’s aphorisms: “Let me withdraw from reality the cookies I stole from the cookie jar.” (I’ve just finished lunch and I’m heading for the kitchen to get three Murray’s sugar free chocolate chip cookies for dessert.)

Yeah. Terry Pratchett also used the potato, and possession of the potato, as a symbol of ‘mistaken spiritual security’ in one or more of his darkly humorous allegorical novels. Our library has them all, and I’ve read them all..

Self denial, self illusion, escape from reality. Yes it is a common feature for us all.
Useful for self survival.
