Great Was Its Fall
Edward Curtin
When it comes, it comes on slowly
The day feels holy, a hush falls down
Whispered names, remembered faces
From desperate places, all gather ‘round
Tom Paxton, “Come on, Holy”
Early morning and the first heavy snow is falling. It is beautiful. I walk around the lake in the holy hush. Alone except for two newly arrived ducks swimming on an open patch of icing water.
When I stop to watch them, the soft sound of the falling snow grows gradually louder, beating drums, like truly listening to Beethoven, not the lionized one, about whose honored status James Agee wrote “is the one surest sign of fatal misunderstanding, and is the kiss of Judas,” but the Beethoven whose music you won’t hear nicely but will hurt you and for which you should be glad.
Although I have come here to flee for an interlude the sound of the world’s anguish and to contemplate its beauty, I am deflected, as usual. How could I not be? Isn’t it true as the poet Rilke said, that “beauty is nothing / but the beginning of terror,” and we, with all our strange thoughts inside us, try to swallow the sobs that accompany all our joys.
My brother-in-law died unexpectedly a few days ago.
I watch the ducks swim so placidly in circles and I wonder.
I realize that my thoughts are meaningless to most but me, a minor writer in a world of screamers, yet I record them here to learn what I may think and to share with a few other human souls the musings of a distraught man in a world made mad and running red like a butcher’s bench with the blood of the innocent shed by ruthless people. I am old but hope I am forever young with a strong foundation that will help me find some insights along this path. Who knows?
I have spent many decades lost in beauty and an intense scholar’s study of the propaganda the world’s rulers use to convince the gullible that their intentions are pure and their actions are carried out for the common good. Few have heeded my findings. Why should they?
While the rulers’ endless lies should be apparent, they are not, for too many people have built their own lives upon foundations made of sand, and though they are shaking, few believe they will fall. And to think the official doll’s house of fabricated reality within which they dwell and upon whose words they build their lives will also fall – that is deemed impossible.
William Saroyan, in his 1939 play “The Time of Your Life,” (winner of both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award) has a minor character, the Arab, repeat, “No foundation. All the way down the line.” That is all he has to say. “No foundation. All the way down the line.” Concise and cutting to the bone. True then, but much, much truer now.
Then came World War II and the defeat of Germany, Japan, and their allies with the United States dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki after fire-bombing Tokyo, Dresden, Cologne and dozens of other Japanese and German cities, intentionally killing vast numbers of civilians.
And if that wasn’t enough, the future CIA Director Allen Dulles, James Jesus Angleton, and colleagues brought nearly 2,000 Nazis scientists, engineers, biological weapons experts to the U.S. to work in government programs, while helping thousands more flee justice by helping them escape to South America and other places along the “rat lines.”
Thus the U.S. became the evil they denounced in others, and it could rightly be said Hitler triumphed in defeat.
Upon this evil foundation, which is now crumbling, the U.S. empire was built despite its alleged Christian underpinnings.
There’s an old saying:
And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.
And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
Mathew 7:21-29
Being alone on my walk helps me focus on the elementary truth that we are all mortal and that beauty is terrifying since it evokes the anguish of its and our endings. And when we go, end, pass on, or die – take your pick – all the secret thoughts, hopes, memories, lives, and dreams we have had will vanish with us, if we have not, while living, found a way to tell the truths we harbor in our secret hearts. We will be but mysterious melodies others might hum without grasping our lyrics, as the Gershwin brothers referenced in their song “They Can’t Take that Away From Me.” Our melodies may linger on for a while once our songs have ended, as the songwriter says, but who we really were will vanish with us into the mists of time.
In quiet moments of timeless reflection, everyone knows we are complex creatures; just as they quickly don their masquerades when time resumes to face the faces that they face to deny such complexity.
When I left the ducks to their circle games, I continued on my way along the lake. The snow blew from the north into my face and made it hard to see. The lake and the neighboring woods disappeared and so did my thoughts as I constantly wiped my eyes of snow. But I felt a certain joy beyond telling.
As the snow and wind eased up, I saw up a hill through a cut in the woods a large doe with her three fawns grazing under some sheltering pine trees on posted property owned by a local college. A smart mother, I thought, since I knew shotgun deer hunting season was underway.
It was then that the hushed peace of the morning was broken by a few shotgun blasts from the western woods. Did the doe and her fawns, who in days past I would often meet and converse with at very close range along the road, take heed? Can such creatures learn to avoid men with guns? Why were the hunters on the prowl for deer to kill? Did they need the meat to eat, or did they just get their kicks from the killing and slicing and gutting of once living creatures who never did them any harm?
I wondered – and leave that wondering to you – as my mind turned to the genocide in Gaza and the murder of the innocent in so many other places by men with guns and weapons more amazing in their killing power, manufactured in spotless factories by people indifferent to how their bread is buttered. But I knew that the workers on the factory floors were no more guilty than those whose butter comes from investments in these ghoulish places. Yes, Thoreau knew:
Do not ask how your bread is buttered, it will make you sick if you do – and the like. A man had better starve at once than lose his innocence in the process of getting his bread. If within the sophisticate man there is not an unsophisticated one, then he is but one of the devil’s angels.
When I was about four years old, I went with my mother to the local butcher shop. When Sol the butcher came to wait on my mother, I noticed his white apron was covered in blood, so I asked him if he cut himself. He laughed and asked me if I would like a slice of liverwurst.
Didn’t Hitler claim to be a vegetarian because of animal suffering?
The shotgun blasts increased on my way home. I stopped to gather some long-needle pine and wild red berry branches for our mantle since it was December and the birth of the Prince of Peace was approaching. My knife slipped and I cut my finger, the blood dripping onto the white snow matched the berries’ redness. It was startlingly beautiful, but the cut was painful as I stanched it with a few tissues.
When I got home and was bandaging my finger and my wife was decorating our mantle with my cuttings, I recalled an analysis of our current situation offered by the French demographer, Emmanuel Todd, “The Dislocation of the West.”
Todd is an all facts guy, an historian, a sociologist, a middle-of the roader, far from a romantic dreamer, an analyst of the extensive data that he gathers. Years back, based on data analysis, he correctly predicted the fall of the Soviet Union. Now he is predicting the fall of the West based on certain specific variables that he considers key. When I read his work and heard him talk, I concurred completely, for I had for years, based on my work in the sociology of religion, reached the same conclusion without all his data to back me up.
We in the West, he says, are living at a time when nihilism, meaninglessness, and zero religious belief is the norm. It has come on slowly over a century and a half to the point where nothing seems holy. We have passed from a Zombie religious state when traditional religious values, but not belief, survived somewhat, to a time when nihilism undergirds everything. A nihilistic foundation, meaning no foundation. Reality has been undermined and a zombie state of lostness prevails, and irrational pure evil state nihilism lives for endless war. Moral values have disappeared behind a façade of fake belief.
If Thoreau were around, he might ask people what they really believed about God, death, and moral values, and the stuttering responses would befit the times. But no one is asking.
The song is over but only the melody lingers on, even as Bing Crosby sings “O Little Town of Bethlehem” on a cyber sale at Amazon.
Todd is a data man, a non-believer, a normal academic, and yet from his research he probably sounds to many as if he is unhinged. But he is just repeating what Jesus, Saroyan’s character, and the Protestant theologian Paul Tillich (in 1948) all said was happening with the shaking and undermining of the Western foundation. Hell would break loose. Nihilism would triumph.
And it did, of course, and will unless …. I don’t know; Todd has no answer.
I think of all the blood in the woods, on the tracks, all the blood being shed everywhere, the killers licking their chops, the earth indifferently drinking all the blood, and the words of the French poet Jacques Prevert’s “Song in the Blood”:
Where’s it going all this spilled blood?
Murder’s blood, war’s blood, misery’s blood
And the blood of men tortured in prisons
And the blood of children calmly tortured by their papa and their mama
And the blood of men whose heads bleed in padded cells
And the roofers blood when the roofer slips and falls from the roof
And the blood that comes and flows in great gushes with the newborn
The mother cries
The baby cries
The blood flows
The earth turns
The earth doesn’t stop turning
The blood doesn’t stop flowing
Where’s it going all this spilled blood?
Blood of the blackjacked
Of the humiliated
Of suicides
Of firing squad victims
Of the condemned
And the blood of those that die just like that by accident
But then my wife suggested that Todd and I may be wrong. When religious belief was strong in the West, weren’t nations and people slaughtering their enemies in the name of religion? Don’t many social scientists use data to argue points that lack counterpoints? Haven’t people long been fanatical killers in the name of religion and for their gods? When did morals or religious belief ever stop the shedding of blood? Such times are few and far between.
Perhaps religious belief is not the explanatory variable that Todd thinks it is and seemed so to me when I first read his work and even concurred with it a few minutes ago.
Could not the key be that mysterious human attribute – love – that like despair cannot be measured, that finds in every other living creature a part of oneself, just the inkling in our hearts that everyone is us and should always be treated as an end and not a means, especially at a time when the spiritual has been subordinated to the technical, everything has become means, and the ends have disappeared.
It may sound laughable to suggest that Fyodor Dostoevsky explained it better than all the data gatherers in his story “The Dream of A Ridiculous Man”:
It is so simple: in one day, in one hour, everything would be settled at once. The one thing is – love thy neighbor as thyself – that is the one thing. That is all, nothing else is needed. You will instantly find how to live.
Or as Jesus said and other great religious leaders affirmed:
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity [love], I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
Corinthians 13
Who can explain it? Who can tell you why?
Not this fool. I can only wonder as I wander in the beautiful falling snow. Like Dostoevsky, “I will not, I cannot believe that evil is the normal condition of men. Yet all of them only laugh at my belief.”
It’s understandable.

The West is weaker because of a loss of social cohesion. Religion was a common rallying point in the old Western nation states. As religion was destroyed it was replaced by political affiliation and divide and conquer tactics from the oligarchs in an endless struggle for more power and dominance. Mass immigration helps even further destabilize the lower classes with different ethnicities and some with strong religious views. There isn’t anything tying the nation state together anymore. So the nation state declines. In a quest for more power and dominance this seemed to be something Western oligarchs wanted. It makes it easy to keep the riff raff arguing amongst themselves so they can grab greater control. The nation state in the West just gets in their way. What they didn’t see coming was a resurgent Russia plus Russia and China coming together to challenge Western dominance. This puts Western oligarchs in a really tough bind. They don’t have the social cohesion to bring Western populations together to fight a major war. Now they are in danger of losing their dominant position in the world. On the oligarchs end it is a continuous struggle for power and dominance. The rest of the population is propagandized endlessly. The oligarch class in the West threw out the nation state in favor of divide and conquer so the lower classes would be too weak and divided to hold onto or seek more power. The problem is Russia reformed it’s nation state and made cause with a resurgent Chinese nation state. We get to watch what happens? Nuclear war? The West closes it’s borders and turns to totalitarianism? The US oligarchs succeed in their hail Mary to create AGI and it turns us all into programmable robots?
Your wife is correct about human war making.. but this is what powerful humans do to gain more dominance and control. Life is pretty good if you get to live inside a powerful empire. Even the USA in spite of the purposeful weakening of the lower classes. At the other end you see what has become of the Palestinians. This is what happens to people who are in the way of a powerful empire. Same as it ever was. Most people aren’t evil. Most people don’t wield any meaningful levels of power in the world.
Sorry… None of that is very romantic thinking.
In her final post from 2013 the Iraqi Riverbend blogger said it more romantically… And found some comfort in the non evil majority of humans. The ones not hyper focused on power and dominance

It is not the loss of religion that causes social failure. It is the loss of truth. President Putin is evil. President Xi is evil. President Assad was evil. President Ghaddafi was evil. President Maduro is evil. Truth? All this must be true because western leaders said so.
When a fool raving on a street corner lies, it means nothing. When a fool lies from the office of a President it matters.
Alas, the fool in the presidential office has much control on the truth as a blind man has over his sight !
‘..all the secret thoughts, hopes, memories, lives, and dreams we have had ..’ each of us is unique, we experience and interact with life, as only we can and that is a precious thing, that is why the mind-lock of the dopamine flick with the black mirror in our hand is so dangerous, it is taking our essence of who we are and who we could become. Blessed Yuletide to All.
“What makes Russia great is its enemies” … (anon) …
Wauw Mr. Curtin. For the first time you caught us(me) Off Guardian with a poem with soul.
Pls allow me to correct one minor (BIG BIG) thing:
Dostoevsky with all his good qualities must not be compared with the Greatest Divine nor be referenced as Author of the holy Commandment:
– love thy neighbor as thyself . Yes precisely it is that easy.
When enough people believe Western Culture is Doomed then there’s no
saving it, and enough believing it is already close to the half-way mark…
“The song is over but only the melody lingers on, even as Bing Crosby sings “O Little Town of Bethlehem” on a cyber sale at Amazon.”
This alone pretty well defines what we are today!
Love in action is a harsh and dreadful thing compared with love in dreams.
—Dostoevsky, “The Brothers Karamazov”
Such Christmassy Thoughts, made me all goosy ! But i’ll tell yer,
i still believe in Santa Claus. The only reason he has left me no presents
in DECADES is because houses no longer come with chimneys. “How’s
he gonna deliver if you dont have a chimney ?”… And they dont have
chimneys because those Greens have convinced planners chimneys
smoke gasses which are killing the planet – but i think the Greens are
just being nasty ’cause they never got the toys they wanted from Santa
when they were young and believing…
Just put a message on the roof with an advise to place the presents at the door. I usually do that and it works fine. I always get the present I wished for to Christmas.
So sad you only get a bowl of soup and no present at Christmas. https://youtu.be/nTzEGiBLw00 .
Thank you. That was poignantly beautiful, Edward. It made me teary…
Edward would rather have you get teary over the state of the world today.
I’m sorry for your unexpected loss.
I had a dream last night that government officials were going door to door, demanding everyone give blood. I refused, claiming body sovereignty, and said I’d rather die than comply. I’m not sure how it’s pertinent except for your reference to blood.
I didn’t know Dostoevsky said that. I am a huge fan. And I fundamentally agree with a huge exclamation mark.
This is a beautiful piece, Edward, thank you for sharing it with us. The melancholy is palpable.
Yes, many I know have died suddenly in the last few years (as yet, no-one very close to me but I reckon it’s only a matter of time) and no-one seems to suspect anything. I am sorry for your loss.
How dare you!!!

Revisionism isn’t about denying what happened; it is about fact-finding and exposing the lies and propaganda surrounding historical events, aimed at furthering a political agenda.

Another one is Hoax or Holocaust – The Arguments by Jürgen Graf

As in the past any new story can be invented to suck up the coffers of a variation of countries.
We should not seek the dead who are not here anymore, but life.

Thank you, Edward, please keep us thinking and analyzing a way out of our elite’s dystopian nightmare!
“…disappearance of social values of religious origin leads to a moral crisis, to a drive to destroy things and people (war) and ultimately to an attempt to abolish reality…”
The above Emmanual Todd quote and the perception of an “attempt to abolish reality” resonates intensely with our transhumanist/tech sectors non consensual deployments to replace domestic human society with an artificial antisocial reality, overseen by an automated, plausible deniability, AI god managing every social need.
In the 50’s, US capitalists, in self defense against possible demand for European style socialist programs, touted the egalitarian nature of a US capitalist economy which held a 5-1 ratio from top to bottom worker income. Society was physical, in the real world, and people communicated and interacted face to face. Now, capitalist screens and smartphones replace reality, any discretionary income or life choices have been trickled up to the top 10%, who own 97% of all stocks, 66% of all wealth, and make 50% of all consumer purchases. Tech companies are dropping their virtual reality projects, like the Metaverse, for an AI bot’s reality. To the elite it’s: ‘Who needs a separate virtual reality when we can make reality, virtual?’
The alienation of domestic human beings trapped in the above tech/capitalist mandated FAKE reality, mirrors the foreign alienation of societies trapped in hallucinated, FAKE conflict-to-war imperialist exploits of the US and it’s Western neo-vassal states.
To this discussion, I just ran into the idea that Model Collapse…
https://charleshughsmith.blogspot.com/2025/12/model-collapse-entire-bubble-economy-is.html
https://alwaysthehorizon.substack.com/p/urban-bugmen-and-ai-model-collapse
… may be an archetypal diagnostic not only for economic and AI behavioral hallucination disorder, but also for the post 1950’s centralization, privatization, and social drawdown behavior of Western elites, driven by an autonomated US empire. The idea that the more a system becomes closed to outside diversity and fresh inputs, it recycles it’s own incestuous operating code, leading to hallucination replacing appropriate-to-humanity decision making. All of their AI; great reset; digital ID, money and remote control surveillance; bio-transhumanist medically mandated technocracy, reeks of Model Collapse hallucination, flywheeling hyper-centralization and the privatization of human beings domestically and multiple wars to recoup empire failing worldwide.

“Why are there so many US military bases in Germany?”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dWW_E6e7LI
“Crime scene Ramstein: The murder headquarters”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skQnL9ljHBk
AI delivers the content:
The video is a German-language political commentary about the US Air Base Ramstein in Germany, framed in a highly critical and conspiratorial way. It argues that Ramstein is the main logistics and command hub for US and NATO air operations in Europe and beyond, including support for Ukraine, drone warfare, and nuclear-related exercises. The narration presents Ramstein as a prime target in a potential nuclear conflict and as a symbol of alleged ongoing US “occupation” and German loss of sovereignty.
## Main themes
– Ramstein is described as the largest US air base outside the United States, with thousands of soldiers and civilian staff, and as a central hub for transporting weapons and equipment, especially for the war in Ukraine.
– The video claims there are underground command facilities from which air operations, reconnaissance, and targeting data for Ukraine and other regions are coordinated and passed on to Ukrainian forces.
– It highlights past and alleged present nuclear roles of Ramstein, including Cold War nuclear storage, nuclear-related exercises, and controversial doctrines on possible first use of nuclear weapons by the US.
## Drone warfare and legal concerns
– The film asserts that global US drone operations, including in countries such as Yemen and Afghanistan, are technically dependent on relay and command infrastructure linked to Ramstein.
– It cites reported casualty figures from drone strikes, including civilian deaths, and argues these actions violate German law and constitutional principles because they are supported from German territory.
– References are made to German and NATO legal frameworks, claiming that the base’s use for such operations contradicts obligations to respect the host country’s laws.
## Historical incidents and local risks
– The video recalls the 1988 air show disaster at Ramstein, where a collision of Italian display jets caused numerous deaths and injuries, and suggests that some have speculated about hidden motives, while admitting there is no conclusive proof.
– It also mentions former weapons storage and maintenance sites in the region, including chemical or nuclear-related facilities from the Cold War era, portraying them as long-term dangers to the local population.
– A large new US military hospital complex near Ramstein is described as preparation for a future major war and is criticized because German taxpayers are said to cover planning costs.
## Political message and rhetoric
– Throughout, the narration argues that Germany remains effectively a US “military colony” without real sovereignty, despite formal treaties that would allow the German government to restrict or end use of such bases.
– Ramstein is labeled a “murder center” and a key symbol of alleged US domination over Germany and Eurasia, with references to NATO’s strategic aim to keep the US “in,” Russia “out,” and Germany “down.”
– The video ends with calls for German sovereignty, withdrawal of US forces, and public resistance, framed as necessary to prevent escalation, nuclear war, and continued subordination of Germany.
Documentary “Jeans, Chewing Gum, and
Elvis – US Occupiers in Northern Germany”.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-iDNBjd9xc
Text from about min. 22: (Black ex-GI) Johnnie Nave: “In France, we were completely isolated. When I was transferred to Bremerhaven, it was wonderful. I had a lot of fun, especially on the weekends. That’s where I met a German woman in a club. We got married and decided to stay here.”
It was a good time for Johnnie Nave. Although white Americans also brought their racism to Europe. After the war, black GIs were housed in separate barracks. Many came from the southern United States, where the racist Ku Klux Klan was active. So Johnnie Nave was used to worse. Nave: “It wasn’t so bad here. I didn’t experience much racism in Bremerhaven. Things were just better in Europe back then.”
The Americans made a great effort to rid the Germans of Nazism. But they were not role models in every respect. After the end of the war, they set up their headquarters in the Reich House, a huge building in downtown Bremen. However, only white military personnel were allowed to use the prestigious main entrance. When black officers or administrative staff wanted to leave the building, they had to use an inconspicuous back staircase. That’s where their toilet was located, which was called the ‘N*gro toilet’ at the time. The staircase also had its own name. Axel Vos (House of the Reich): “It’s hard to say, but it’s the so-called ‘N*ro staircase’ in the jargon of the US Army in 1945.”
Hans Koschnick (former mayor, SPD): “Only white people were allowed in certain bars and restaurants. In other areas, the Americans ensured that people of color had their own toilets. Maybe they were cleaner than the white ones. Or vice versa, whatever. We realized that they were Republicans, but there was no democracy in the sense of equality. Black soldiers had a harder time in the American military. This sometimes led to some of the local population being particularly nice to black people.”
Bremerhaven’s nightlife soon became famous throughout northern Germany. The pub owners quickly did good business with the Americans. Bremerhaven made pop history with a flying visit that lasted just under half an hour. Elvis, the smartest GI of all time, on his way to his barracks in southern Germany. All the glitz and glamour that the Americans brought to post-war Germany, the great music and the dawn of modernity. Like a ray of light, Elvis illuminated Bremerhaven for a brief moment. Like all GIs, he arrived by ship and then continued his journey by train.
Bremerhaven was also famous for its jazz bars. Nave: “There was Chico’s on Rickmersstraße. We always went there. They even had their own American bus line so that the soldiers could get straight back to the barracks.”
A discotheque in Bremerhaven attracted black soldiers with soul music, becoming their meeting place. White girls sought their acquaintance here, and contact was quickly established. Despite racist undertones, black and white people met in the famous pub. It was probably also this casual taste of new freedom that seduced the Germans into democracy. The small Nigerian Chico contributed more to democratization with his jazz bar than all US re-education measures. In his only interview, he raves about his good musicians and the atmosphere in the bar, saying, “Jazz has shown people so much, and I just never gave up.”
Incidentally, the execution of 16 y/o Heinz Petry (or his friend Josef Schöner) can be seen in the “Chewing Gum” documentary at min. 7:23. Of course, the age of the “spies” is not mentioned. They were practically children. The justification given for the death sentence can only be described as perverse.
https://www.newspapers.com/article/journal-and-courier-2-hitler-youth-heinz/114633162/
This is completely disproportionate to all the old “Nazis” who were allowed to walk free or remain alive. A total of six boys were abused here to “set an example.” Petry was Catholic, while Helmuth Hübener, who was murdered by the Nazis, was Mormon. There are even memorial pages for him in America.
Crimes committed by Allies will remain unpunished as the perpetrators have long since died: the sinking of refugee ships with thousands of victims, the incendiary bombs dropped on countless cities full of civilians, the miserable starvation camps in the Rhine meadows for thousands of German POWs and so on.

The “defender” of the two boys was this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robben_Wright_Fleming
https://bentley.umich.edu/news-events/magazine/war-is-a-colossal-mistake/
Unfortunately, it was not possible to find out who the “president of the general military court” was who passed the death sentence on the boys (was he Jewish?), which was carried out in a gravel pit near Braunschweig. Only who rejected their plea for clemency, namely this miserable bastard with a nasty big nose:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Hood_Simpson
This guy is said to have filmed the execution.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Sevareid
Petry could still be alive today and
would be 96 years old. Expand text:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/69475190/heinz-petry
Why did the boys only learn of their completely senseless death sentence one day before its execution, and—brace yourselves—three weeks after the end of the war? How could the sentence still be valid when the supposed “deterrent effect” it was intended to have had long since become superfluous?
This can only have been a case of extreme hatred and sadism. Was what is being sold to us today as a “moving farewell letter” written in his own words, or is it once again just a forced fabrication for “denazification” produced under pressure?
Petry’s younger brother (1936-2020)

A good, meditative piece. Thoreau’s “Walden” influence apparent.
Ancient Wars did determine the god a nation would worship and the future god to be worshiped by later generations. Whether lumps of inanimate stone or a real living God. In many ways, that hasn’t changed. Whether waging war for the ‘gods’ of nihilism or otherwise.
So yes, a drop of blood from a cut finger does spoil otherwise pristine snow, yet there’s still other non-terrifying beauty to behold beyond it.
Some beauty being more persistent in its nature than those more transient types
and it was Dostoevsky (via the protagonist, Myshkin, in the novel, ‘The Idiot’) who said, ‘Beauty will save the world’; and you, good Sir, are beautiful: your heart, thoughts, hopes, dreams and writings are reflective of a man who has the soul of Christ! Thank you; and Merry Christmas to you and yours! RGB-Y5 out!!
One of literature’s greatest characters imho – Myshkin, the Prince
Someone to whom everyone naturally exposed all their innermost thoughts, despite his frequent physical falling to the ground.
‘The Idiot’ is literature at its finest; and one of the more underappreciated pieces of work created by Dostoevsky! RGB-Y5 out!!
Twice in 30 years and somehow I was alone.
Very boring book. I doubt whether anybody who says they read it actually read it.
“Beauty will save the world.” Good one. You mean like Taylor Swift? Or the latest supermodel? I never thought they were smart enough to save the world. But maybe–who knows?
Definitely not her, or them
‘very boring book’?!? – what does that even mean; reading literature – whether it’s Dostoevsky, Proust or Shakespeare – is not an endeavor wherein one can simply assign a label as hackneyed and hokey as, ‘boring’; rather it’s one that requires a breadth and depth of thinking which would enable a reader to invoke expansive thoughts/ideas of intricacy, nuance and complexity. Hence, in lieu of attempting to continue w/ this argumentation in support of a writer s/a Dostoevsky it would be much more sensible and sane to just say: beauty will save the world (viz. expand your mind; expound your thoughts; and, most significantly, say goodbye to your EGO!). That is all! RGB-Y5 out!!
Dostoyevsky, like most 19th-century writers, got paid per word. The Prince is particularly full of padding therefore. Particularly.
Beauty in nature, in music, in art, in architecture, in love, in our relations, in our family, in our love to God..
Great writing here…thank you Edward Curtin
The rains have come to the Wet Coast and so I will take my walk and let your words soak in…Peace
and, i believe, it was Dostoevsky (via the protagonist, Myshkin, in the novel, ‘The Idiot’) who said, ‘Beauty will save the world’; and you, my good Sir, are beautiful: in your thoughts; hopes; heart; wishes; and writings! God Bless; and Merry Christmas to you and yours! RGB-Y5 out!!
I knew there was a reason I came to OG to parse content. I had just forgotten for a while why that was. It was for writing like this article!
What a wonderful thought-provoking article! I am speechless for once.
Sorry to read that your brother-in-law has passed away – as for your thoughts, its always kind of rejuvenating to get them from your mind and onto paper, in this case online, and no matter how minor a writer you think you are there’s always people willing to read what your thoughts are.
They say getting in touch with nature, is good for the mind, the body, and the soul, thank you for sharing your thought with us – at this difficult time for you.
Beautifully said. Love! James 1:27 pure religion and undefiled before God, is to visit the orphans and the widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unspotted from the world…
A guilt operating system tells you YOU are mortal.
The silence within all that is, reveals otherwise – but not to what you think you are!
Masking over guilt is set ‘too big to fail’
Not least by accusing our sin in the other.
Looking without – ( as a blind eye to looking within) runs as a wish given power.
Looking within is then framed ‘externally’.
But looking within the moment at hand is not an inquisition – it’s a simple curiosity.
Innocence of being cannot be ‘claimed’ or boosted by guilting (judging). But we simply do not and can not create our own existence – though we can and do shape our experience as a ‘mindset of rules and filters framed by judgements set over…and apart from… the living.
Here is a part of my morning read:
Not all wishes are inherently bad. Wishes shaping our future reality
Of course your wish shapes your future – but when you put away childish things and embrace the presence of what is truly unfolding here, this presence extends – not in time but from the release of time – as a basis for the restoring of your true will.
That wishes can be exchanged for an active willingness is itself an awakening from a dream of a life to an awareness of what made the dream. The thinking of the world says action must protect its maker, but freedom is not of the world, but to be truly moved.
There is a difference between wishing and willing.
One is a private show -seeking reinforcement.
The other connects or rather reveals our connectedness within a living universe.
Conflict between love and fear is really a matter of decision – not of an actual battle. While we fear love as sacrifice of our face of control we will engage the wish to love, subject always to terms and conditions of engagement.
The mind that must demonise the bad – in order to justify itself ‘good’ is the blind slave to a wish denied, hated and feared – so as to see it always at the hand of another in a world of shadows.
By all means wish – I only call for bringing to awareness what otherwise runs automatically…in our name.
I think I get the distinction. ‘Wishing’ as pursuing individual ego-based goals. And ‘willing’ as surrendering to ego-less goals beyond oneself. Like those of the ‘living universe’. Similar to joining a group with goals bigger than oneself.
Which does differ in some ways from the common vernacular usage of the terms – ‘Wishing’ as simply being more passive than ‘willing’. ‘Willing’ generally implying resolve or action of some sort, on top of a basic desire or dream. In such usage a ‘wish’ can often lead to a ‘will’. But that’s essentially semantics.
Nevertheless I think I get the basic idea. To seek bigger worthwhile causes beyond one’s own petty concerns. Which does make sense, both on a spiritual and individual level.
What is the identity of the ‘woke’ but a wish to be ‘good’, set as a wish to deny or ‘scape evil?
That by investment and acceptance of such a framed and contrasted ‘solution’, does evils blind and unwitting?
The ‘woke’ type does seem similar to the modern-day Pharisee. No dipping the wafer in the wine cup (often even to this day, due to legacy Covid restrictions)
Yet who are we to judge what is good or evil? “Do not judge that you be not judged” as a Wise Man once said (Matthew 7:1–3, Luke 6:37)
Yet of course “whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad”
No I mean identifying in a false sense of virtue – masking over a conflicted identity.
The Church?
We are already invested in the judging of good and ill – so let’s not pretend. But the conscious acceptance of what goes forth from our mouth (mind) and boy (action) is our current or active choice. If we watch our mind (emotion and body) we are free to re-evaluate judgements that give and receive a false with-ness or undermine true worth-ship. This may be a process over time because we are stakeholders in our own self-illusion and fear to lose the self we think to gain thereby (or the self hate we think to get rid of).
Yes the Greek quote was a pre Christian perspective – where gods and daemons (powers inferred or identified by their effects) were associated with making mad as either a gift – or a curse.
I’m reading The Greeks and the Irrational.
Greatness in God – makes no claim to self-specialness and does not attract calamity as does hubris.
Heartbreakingly beautiful. True. Sublime. Truth given voice, like quiet rustling of leaves… ephemeral, ancient, eternal… resonating one to another…. Love
Here’s an easier link than the one I sent earlier.
