Okay, who had “the US invades Venezuela and kidnaps the President” down as the first big story of 2026?
Well done if you did, you probably got good odds.
That’s the “breaking news” as of about two hours ago:

The story is that a meticulously planned special forces raid resulted in Nicolas Maduro and his wife being dragged from their bedroom and whisked out of the country. They are reportedly en route to New York on a US naval ship.
This was foreshadowed late last year, when laughable stories about the US Special Forces “rescuing” Venezuelan “opposition leader” María Corina Machado. The Nobel Peace laureate (ha!) was said to be “in hiding” before that, in fear of the Maduro regime.
It’s a ridiculous story, but we live in the age of ridiculous stories.
In terms of reaction, the predictable people from each side are having their pre-programmed reactions. There’s going to be a lot of talk about sovereignty and the greater good in the next few weeks.
…but I can’t help but feel this is just another story designed to set a meta-narrative.
The US is going to heel turn and take down the notion of national interests and “old-fashioned individualism” in the process. Since it’s about oil, we’ll be told this is one more reason to focus on renewable energy, and that climate change is making warfare more likely and is thus an international security emergency.
People who die in “climate or energy conflicts” will be added to the “climate-related deaths” statistics.
And you know what would stop things like this from happening?
Global government.

While perusing the US mainstream media outlets for articles and comments to the articles (where allowed and always heavily censored), it was clear that almost no one has any clue about all this. All they know is the company line given to them by Trump and the media. Its not that relevant to this article and — believe it or not — its becoming ‘well known’ that there is a connection between Covid and heart problems. My cardiologist said that about 30% of those diagnosed with Covid have a history of atrial fibrillation but was unable to state whether vaccines — specifically mRNA — were involved. Its a good thing that its being investigated; it was a very touchy subject when I asked about it.
Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled program — “The Empire Strikes (Back?)”. I’ve scanned the criminal complaint issued by our DoJ and it seems pretty thin, it appears that to go from “we don’t like Maduro or his politics” to “he’s a criminal” they’ve got to somehow link him to the Tren de Aragua. This might be a bit tricky but knowing our government’s virtually infinite resources, control of media through various media combines that need favors and its tendency to invent stuff nothing is entirely certain. One thing I am sure of is that it probably wasn’t a smart move to bring Maduro to the US for a show trial. The rules of criminal trials require all sorts of things like discovery which we know will need to reveal things that must be kept secret ‘for national security reasons’ but then we can’t really try him in secret because the world is watching. I reckon that like their plans to rule Venezuela from DC via some puppet (who will either behave “or else”) this indictment hasn’t really been thought through. They’ve just done the easy bit — apply overwhelming force and kidnap a few people.

The U.S. campaign is to systematically control, threaten, or sever these lifelines. Regime change in Caracas isn’t about hurting Russia tomorrow; it’s about denying China a reliable partner today.
Prong Two: Fortifying the Empire
Before a great power confrontation, you secure your flanks. The U.S. is engaged in a global consolidation of its sphere of influence. In Europe, the Ukraine war has galvanized NATO and disciplined allies. In the Western Hemisphere, Venezuela serves as the object lesson in imperial discipline. It is a warning to every nation in America’s traditional backyard: alignment has its rewards, and defiance has its consequences. The message is clear—before the U.S. turns its full focus across the Pacific, its own hemisphere must be perfectly aligned and unequivocally under its sway.
The oil-price theory is a distraction, a false memory from the wrong war. The recent assault on Venezuela’s sovereignty is a forward-looking move in the new one. It’s not about delivering a knockout blow to Moscow, but about tightening the strategic encirclement of Beijing and ensuring no rebellious provinces remain in the American imperium. The goal isn’t a temporary dip at the pump; it’s the permanent architecture of unipolar dominance. In that light, the Caracas gambit makes perfect, ruthless sense.
I figure all major financial and resource-rich economies, must be brought to heel in time for a wholesale privateering capture of the last vestiges (pretence, if you like) of public-moderated governance. The capture, of course, involves police state mass surveillance and private central bank-controlled digital currencies (block chain, “stable” coin) whose veneer appears as a national product, but whose back-end database possesses a harmonized API facilitating centralized management and control.
It wouldn’t do; to have a cowboy government in Venezuela, sitting on enough resources to maintain economic independence (and a favourable climate), attracting independent-minded skilled labour and the disenfranchised Western community of intellectuals, entrepreneurs, scientists and thinkers who recognize the fascist-feudal power grab by faceless privateers hiding behind banks and corporations.
When threatened by invasion, those with the foresight and means flee to greener pastures.
The cabal of wold-domineering profiteers have been actively working to undermine Venezuela’s non-aligned green pastures for 25 years. In fact, it was the current Canadian Prime Minister who, as then head of the Bank of England, seized (stole) Venezuela’s gold deposits during Trump’s first term.

I personally think this may overestimate the degree of control states had over the spread of COVID, or any highly infectious disease. For example, it took a huge concerted effort by China and Australia to contain it for as long as they did, with Australia reaching zero cases at one point, before (a documented) re-introduction by cruse liner passengers. Although it is not impossible undetected cases where still out there too. Both were pilloried by hypocritical Western media as authoritarian, despite the normalized authoritarianism all around us for no reason other then to benefit capital and its favored cohorts.
However, I think we can agree that “banks, markets, corpos” took full advantage of the situation to screw as much wealth out of the public and governments as humanly possible, and afterward have used COVID as an excuse for permanently higher prices, resulting a higher cost of living, ie “inflation”. There has been, and it continues, a huge upward movement of national and global wealth share. It almost seems like COVID broke a damn wall in the minds of the propertied, and now everywhere you turn businesses are trying for the maximum price the market will bare.
