Curious Bedfellows: The Neocon and Progressive Alliance to Destroy Donald Trump

Philip Giraldi, January 14, 2019, via American Herald Tribune

The Roman poet Ovid’s masterful epic The Metamorphoses includes the memorable opening line regarding the poem’s central theme of transformation. He wrote In nova fert animus mutatas dicere formas corpora, which has been translated as “Of shapes transformed to bodies strange, I purpose to entreat…”

Ovid framed his narrative around gods, heroes and quasi-historical events but if he were around today, he would no doubt be fascinated by the many transformations of the group that has defined itself as neoconservative. The movement began in a cafeteria in City College of New York in the 1930s, where a group of radical Jewish students would meet to discuss politics and developments in Europe. Many of the founders were from the far left, communists of the Trotskyite persuasion, which meant that they believed in permanent global revolution led by a vanguard party. The transformation into conservatives of a neo-persuasion took place when they were reportedly “mugged by reality” into accepting that the standard leftist formulae were not working to transform the world rapidly enough. As liberal hawks, they then hitched their wagon to the power of the United States to bring about transformation by force if necessary and began to infiltrate institutions like the Pentagon to give themselves the tools to achieve their objectives, which included promotion of regime change wars, full spectrum global dominance and unconditional support for Israel.

The neocons initially found a home with Democratic Senator Henry “Scoop” Jackson, but they moved on in the 1970s and 1980s to prosper under Ronald Reagan as well as under Democrat Bill Clinton. Their ability to shape policy peaked under George W. Bush, when they virtually ran the Pentagon and were heavily represented in both the national security apparatus and in the White House. They became adept at selling their mantra of “strong national defense” to whomever was buying, including to President Obama, even while simultaneously complaining about his administration’s “weakness.”

The neoconservatives lined up behind Hillary Clinton in 2016, appalled by Donald Trump’s condemnation of their centerpiece war in Iraq and even more so by his pledge to end the wars in Asia and nation-building projects while also improving relations with the Russians. They worked actively against the Republican candidate both before he was nominated and elected and did everything they could to stop him, including libeling him as a Russian agent.

When Trump was elected, it, therefore, seemed that the reign of the neocons had ended, but chameleonlike, that have changed shape and are now ensconced both in some conservative as well as in an increasing number of progressive circles in Washington and in the media. Against all odds, they have even captured key posts in the White House itself with the naming of John Bolton as National Security Adviser and Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State. Bolton’s Chief of Staff is Fred Fleitz, a leading neocon and Islamophobe while last week Trump added Iran hawk Richard Goldberg to the National Security Council as director for countering Iranian weapons of mass destruction. Goldberg is an alumnus of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, which is the leading neocon think tank calling incessantly for war with Iran.

Meanwhile, the neocon metamorphosis is nearly complete as many of the neocons, who started out as Democrats, have returned home, where they are being welcomed for their hardline foreign policy viewpoint. Glenn Greenwald reports that, based on polling of party supporters, the Democrats have gone full-Hillary and are now by far more hawkish than the Republicans, unwilling to leave either Syria or Afghanistan.

The neocon survival and rejuvenation is particularly astonishing in that they have been wrong about virtually everything, most notably the catastrophic Iraq War. They have never been held accountable for anything, though one should note that accountability is not a prominent American trait, at least since Vietnam. What is important is that neocon views have been perceived by the media and punditry as being part of the Establishment consensus, which provides them with access to programming all across the political spectrum. That is why neocon standard-bearers like Bill Kristol and Max Boot have been able to move effortlessly from Fox News to MSNBC where they are fêted by the likes of Rachel Maddow. They applauded the Iraq War when the Establishment was firmly behind it and are now trying to destroy Donald Trump’s presidency because America’s elite is behind that effort.

Indeed, the largely successful swing by the neocons from right to left has in some ways become more surreal, as an increasing number of progressive spokesmen and institutions have lined up behind their perpetual warfare banner. The ease with which the transformation took place reveals, interestingly, that the neocons have no real political constituency apart from voters who feel threatened and respond by supporting perpetual war, but they do share many common interests with the so-called liberal interventionists. Neocons see a global crisis for the United States defined in terms of power while the liberals see the struggle as a moral imperative, but the end result is the same: intervention by the United States. This fusion is clearly visible in Washington, where the Clintons’ Center for American Progress (CAP) is now working on position papers with the neoconservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI).

One of the most active groups attacking President Trump is “Republicans for the Rule of Law,” founded by Bill Kristol in January 2018, as a component of Defending Democracy Together (DDT), a 501(c)4 lobbying group that also incorporates projects called The Russia Tweets and Republicans Against Putin. Republicans Against Putin promotes the view that President Trump is not “stand[ing] up to [Vladimir] Putin” and calls for more aggressive investigation of the Russian role in the 2016 election.

DDT is a prime example of how the neoconservatives and traditional liberal interventionists have come together as it is in part funded by Pierre Omidyar, the billionaire co-founder of eBay who has provided DDT with $600,000 in two grants through his Democracy Fund Voice, also a 501(c)4. Omidyar is a political liberal who has given millions of dollars to progressive organizations and individuals since 1999. Indeed, he is regarded as a top funder of liberal causes in the United States and even globally together with Michael Bloomberg and George Soros. His Democracy Fund awarded $9 million in grants in 2015 alone.

Last week, the Omidyar-Kristol connection may have deepened with an announcement regarding the launch of the launch of a new webzine The Bulwark, which would clearly be at least somewhat intended to take the place of the recently deceased Weekly Standard. It is promoting itself as the center of the “Never Trump Resistance” and it is being assumed that at least some of the Omidyar money is behind it.

Iranian-born Omidyar’s relationship with Kristol is clearly based on the hatred that the two share regarding Donald Trump. Omidyar has stated that Trump is a “dangerous authoritarian demagogue…endorsing Donald Trump immediately disqualifies you from any position of public trust.” He has tweeted that Trump suffers from “failing mental capacity” and is both “corrupt and incapacitated.”

Omidyar is what he is – a hardcore social justice warrior who supports traditional big government and globalist liberal causes, most of which are antithetical to genuine conservatives. But what is interesting about the relationship with Kristol is that it also reveals what the neoconservatives are all about. Kristol and company have never been actual conservatives on social issues, a topic that they studiously avoid, and their foreign policy is based on two principles: creating a state of perpetual war based on fearmongering about foreign enemies while also providing unlimited support for Israel. Kristol hates Trump because he threatens the war agenda while Omidyar despises the president for traditional progressive reasons. That hatred is the tie that binds and it is why Bill Kristol, a man possessing no character and values whatsoever, is willing to take Pierre Omidyar’s money while Pierre is quite happy to provide it to destroy a common enemy, the President of the United States of America.

The glaring problem with simplistic discourse about Trump being some sort of valiant crusader against the Deep State, and the Israeli / Ziocon nexus; is that he is the most tightly controlled President by the Jewish Zionist power structure in the post 1948 history of the country, and that is saying quite a bit.

There are factions and struggles within the Deep State. Trump is uneasily coexisting with the Washington D.C. based sectors of the Deep State. He is, however, very much in the pocket of the NYC / Florida / Nevada based Jewish interests, and the Koch Brothers type of reactionaries and their fossil fuel corporations.

One final thing. It is true that such figures from a previous generation, such as Irving Kristol and Margaret Himmelfarb (Bill Kristol’s parents) and Norman Podhoretz (John Podhoretz’s father) were originally leftists. But the next generation such as Bill Kristol and John Podhoretz have been right-wingers during their entire adult lives. It is another example of the fact that there iscertainly no left, nor much of a right, in the corridors of power in the U.S. There are just permanent economic and tribal interests, the latter largely represented by Jewish power and manipulation of the U.S. government to further Israel’s agenda.

The only consistent theme with Newconism is that they are Jewish and that they support the interests of other Jews – in Israel and other places as well.

It is about time the non-Jews decided to put their own interests first and foremost. To behave in a tribal fashion – just like the Jews do.

I guess that makes me an untouchable anti-Semitic goy. 🙂

Giraldi is an unabashed Trump lover who cant see the trees for the woods… Trump is just as if not more authoritarian as the centrist liberal elites he opposes , just listen to any of his two faced rants and it rapidly becomes evident that he is every bit the warmongering imperialist scum-bag he appears…. he isn’t going to avert War if it means raking in profits, it should be self evident that he represents a different equally rapacious faction of the Power Elite.. a lying duplicitous piece of SHIT, who couldn’t care less about Americans who live below the poverty line , nor anyone else… and how anyone ever thought he might pull back from full spectrum global dominance and re industrialise America is a mystery to me… the reason they are framing him is probably pretty simple, a life and death struggle between two power factions ….Trump is not doing anything every other POTUS has not done before him including exploiting the false hopes of the disillusioned majority of Americans struggling to make ends meet….. you people need a reality check!!

No in fact it wouldn’t be fair , I don’t hate Trump , i am merely contemptuous of him, as I am of mainstream sham parliamentary politics , lesser evilism and tweedle dum, tweedle dee Democracy, Trump is a phony and the idea that he is any kind of Anti-Imperialist or even a genuine non interventionist conservative is demonstrably absurd.. all one has to do is examine the public record.
He reminds me very much of Obama another two faced psychopathic snake oil salesman who was very deft at playing the infotainment Media……. like Obama he has only thus far implemented policy’s which benefit the crony capitalist elites.

Trump like all previous POTUS have never deviated from what is known by most cynics . The Wolfawitz doctrine. Giraldi is one of the few US pundit that has outed these neo-Trotskyist for what they are. Perpetual war and US hegemony. Perfect example. The so called left in the land of the not so free are all wetting themselves over Tulsi Gabbards bid for POTUS in 2020. The progressive wing luv her the liberal interventionist hate her. An Israeli passport protects you from being extradited because Israel refuses to extradite anybody with a passport who can get to the country. Thus the Ukrainian Government has many dual citizens at the top who like the idea if it comes on too for them with allegations of big time fraud they can simply pop on a plane and they -and their money – will be safe. I wonder how many American politicians have this at the back of their minds?

If one does a basic web search asking which “Neocons” are “dual U.S.-Israeli citizens,” a great clarity quickly emerges from the fog as to why U.S. Middle East policy and Israeli policy appear to be connected at the hip. The number of U.S. members of Congress who are also dual citizens is also quite stunning and enlightening.

Thanks for going to the trouble. I appreciate it. Your comments are certainly supported and I am gobsmacked. No wonder the odious Netanyahu got barely interrupted standing ovations in Congress. What is with the American voter? They even reelected the representative for Miami Beach, Debbie W.S. after she defrauded Sanders and his supporters.

One can only hope that the over-the-top attempts to literally criminalize American citizen’s freedom to chose to support the BDS movement will somehow wake people up. Though I can’t say I see much evidence of that yet.
You’re absolutely on the money with your comments on Debbie W.S. – how on earth can you be fired for obvious corruption and even be allowed to run? Amazing. Maybe this is what our elites mean when they tell us we’re the “exceptional nation,” as in ‘exceptionally corrupt’ perhaps.

George Cornell: “They even reelected the representative for Miami Beach, Debbie W.S. after she defrauded Sanders and his supporters.”

Ah Miami, Florida. Reminds me of the travel agent who advised a famous British Lawyer, “You don’t want to visit Florida, Sir, it’s full of Jews”. The Lawyer replied, “Then I suppose one more won’t make much difference”.

It was Florida Lawyers under Florida Governor Jeff Bush who judged that Al Gore had lost the vote in Florida; a decision which narrowly let in the infamous Bush regime whose Israeli dual-citizens listed by IGT above, were vociferous for the destruction of Iraq (yet another country classed by Israel as “an existential enemy”).

Hillary Killary of course, whom Florida candidate Debbie Wassermann Schultz supported against Sanders, proved even more vociferous for the destruction of yet another “existential enemy of Israel” namely, Syria.

We must also take into consideration the funding, training, arming and supporting of the proxy forces created directly and indirectly by the Obama administration. How many innocent people did they kill? This would be ISIS in particular. Obama’s war was through pure deception. Trumps statement that we also need to kill the families of terrorists was a policy set under Obama called ‘drone splat with double dipping’….that’s the programming of drones to return to kill family members picking up their mothers body parts. I like Abby, but also noticed a couple of babies go down the drain when the bath was emptied in this particular piece.

Trump’s aim to drain the swamp doesn’t seem so daft once you see the real power brokers manipulating the narrative against him with a resurrection of McCarthyism (which is an American habit). When he criticised the Federal Reserve Bank, the beating heart of US elitist control, it was clear he was becoming serious; nobody, not even JFK, dared poke the ‘Central Bank of America’ which is a private organisation and has been sacrosanct since 1913. The millionaires decide on interest rates and mere Presidents can go whistle.

The Intercept was the first site that alerted me to just how far into the ‘alternative media’ the ‘security’ services can reach if they want to. I suspect initially Greenwald was allowed free reign as far as the staff and editorial line was concerned, but control has very noticeably been excised in the last 12 months or so, though who by and to what end I can only speculate. 4 out of every 5 articles these days is just a slightly more developed analysis of the official narrative. The comments section can still be very informative, however, if you’re prepared to wade through pages of pro and anti israeli comments.

It becomes increasingly difficult to avoid seeing Greenwald as some sort of deliberate gate keeper figure, though I can sympathise he may in fact just be trying to save his own skin.

Andrew, do you imply that the FBI actually tested for explosives — and their report has been suppressed?

Or do you mean the FBI, like the committee which issued the Official Report, avoided the usual test for explosives in cases where modern buildings fall down?

I ask for clarification because I read at the time that the FBI said, they had no evidence against Osama Ben Laden or Saddam Hussein.

The FBI did extensive and thorough forensics and sample testing from the crime scene of 9/11 with the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The molecular examination of the remains and dust was conducted to the nano level. An admirable undertaking. The thoroughly documented results were printed up at a cost of over 8 Million tax payer dollars. The documents were unfortunately misplaced. the cost to duplicate the tests was deemed too much of a financial burden on the American public by law makers. We must commend the frugality of our law makers and move on…..INGSOC

Reading the above what a sadly deranged and psychotically ill country America has become. Totally immune to the violence they spread throughout the world whilst living in a land where you must arm yourself and fear constantly for your own personal safety. Industries and employment dependent on the manufacture of weaponry to be used both at home and abroad in a never ending game of antagonistic behaviour towards perceived enemies. This world has a cancer and treatment is urgently required before we are all infected.

Defending Democracy Together, but the irony of the acronym is bitter. DDT has already been used and the environment is still recovering. Vipers in sheeps’ clothing. Kristol cannot suppress his shit-eating grin as he advocates brutal policies which cause mass suffering. When Carlin said “fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity” , he must have had DDT in mind.

George Cornell,
DDT is the most effective anti-malarial treatment invented by mankind.
It saved thousands of lives in WWII in the Pacific where malaria was taking as many US lives as the Japanese.
DDT saved many thousands of lives in the Italian campaign also.

The demonisation of DDT through Rachel Carson’s scientifically totally fraudulent novel, Silent Spring was a masterwork of disinformation, with all the weight & power of the 1%s fake news MSM behind it.

The 1972 “banning” of DDT by the head of the US EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, William Ruckleshaus resulted in the horrible deaths through malaria of very possibly 100 million people in the third world, mostly women & children.

That is a very real holocaust.

There is NO documented proof of any environmental or human damage from the proven non-carcinogenic DDT.
There is also no proof to back up the oft-repeated lie that our planet is overpopulated.

Book: Merchants of Despair, by Robert Zubrin.

Interesting that you should mention ‘Silent Spring’. My home town was the recipient of a Federal takeover in 1964, based on that BS.
