I’m surprised that you haven’t gone for protonmail.com as your temporary solution. I would emagine google forwarding copies of all emails directly to NSA.
I see the logic of ProtonMail but as it’s hopefully very temporary it’s largely academic.
These people work for google and the US, so they would be happy with that. The whole attack & victim thing is just fake. they have no enemies powerful enough to do anything, THEY JUST WANT TO LOOK REAL.

SMTP transfers your messages unencrypted, all email uses SMTP. ProtonMail will encrypt your mail if you use a key shared with the recipient. But that means that they will put the encrypted message in the unencrypted message. Nothing new in that, similar systems have existed for ages, look at PHP email.
ProtonMail is ok, the software is ok, nothing special and no more encrypted than any other system. They got a big marketing boost because they used to work at CERN, but it hasn’t yet proved to be better than the good alternatives.
Bottom line, the NSA is reading your messages, whether you use gmail or ProtonMail.

ProtonVPN is very dodgy on an Apple 5S phone. Having problems with it staying connected. When it disconnects it does not tell me, so I happily keep on commenting as if I was protected. Too much of this shit is based on trust and too much software out there is shit. Open source is the only real solution.

Gmail is a joke as a first choice for a temporary email. All content scanned, tracked, shared and sold off with matching adverts and suggested search results.

My error, just comments on Gmail in general. I use Tutanota and Proton mail, both good.
Email has the same level of security as a postcard so you should never put anything in an email that you wouldn’t be happy publishing on a noticeboard. Encryption such as PGP will help to keep mail private but for this to work you’ve got to maintain very strict hygene on your systems (and even then the fact of your communication — the correspondents, length and timing can tell almost as much about your communication as the actual text).
If you feel you really need to counfound the NSA, GCHQ or whoever then the best line of defence is probably to feed the beast a lot of convincing looking but generally meaningless messages. This, too, would need to be done carefully to avoid detectable patterns in the junk but if its worth that much to you then the effort would be well spent.
