Our successor to This Week in the Guardian, This Week in the New Normal is our weekly chart of the progress of autocracy, authoritarianism and economic restructuring around the world. Somewhat delayed and curtailed this week, but you can blame 9/11 for that (along with so much else).
1. “Seriously guys, climate change is a public health issue”
For a while now OffG has been highlighting how the language used around “climate change” is trying to change it from a an environmental issue into a public health issue.
We’ve explained the reasoning before – if climate change is a public health threat, then you can use the Covid precedent to institute “climate lockdowns”.
Yet another example appeared in the news this week, with the Guardian reporting:

If the title isn’t quite on-the-nose enough for you, well here’s the subhead:
Call for EU to match WHO’s air pollution regulatory limits as impact of climate emergency interlinks with human health
They’re going to keep pushing this, until “climate change=public health” is ingrained in the public subconscious.
2. They’re not done with the UFO thing yet
The Daily Mail reported this week that the Pentagon had “revealed” the world’s “UFO hotspots”.
Yes, fresh off July’s Congressional “UFO Hearings”, yet more “declassified information” is appearing in the press. This time in the form of a heat map which places like Fox news spared no time in turning into totally-non-cheesy digital graphics:

But not understanding something doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. And here we are, with serious coverage (if the Mail qualifies as such) of “UFO hot spots”.
You’d be forgiven for thinking the narrative managers are just throwing headlines at the wall and seeing what sticks at this point.
“People who trust their gut are suckers for ‘bulls–t’ conspiracy theories”
That’s the headline of a New York Post article on two new studies from Sweden and the UK. According to these studies, people who “trust their gut” instead of believing authorities are “more likely to believe misinformation”.
They try and to dress it up in babble about “subjective truth”, but the message is clear: Trusting your own eyes is wrong, assessing for yourself is wrong. Believe what you’re told, trust in authority, never question your leaders.
As we discussed in a recent article about the nature of “science”, these are studies essentially done to order. A conclusion awaiting commissioned evidence.
Its prompts us to ask an important question: How many terrible events in human history – wars or genocides or large abuse of human rights of any kind – were set in motion by people sacrificing their minds to groupthink?
Almost all. A collapse of individuality is practically required for a society to become monstrous.
…conversely, what harm has ever been done by non-conformists who just want to be left alone?
I’ll keep trusting my gut, thanks. And let others keep blindly doing as they’re told.

“What one sees today (Climate Change, for example) are violations of the values and beliefs a community shares. There are no community discussions, no Town Hall meetings. There is only corporate control of message.”
That’s a powerful indicator of a change in media discourse so deep and ominous that it has totally bypassed the consciousness of most people. Media was always molded by the powerful. But there was a certain leeway permitted – necessarily so since, up until recently, it was acknowledged (from those above) that a totally controlled media would be incapable of fooling anyone. There had to be the appearance of a plurality of opinion. And the appearance could only be effective if there was, up to a point, actual plurality of opinion. Thus there was always a tension between what the rulers had to permit and what they really wanted the media to say. In other words, there had to be a token allowance of community discussions and Town Hall meetings whilst the rulers struggled to exert as much corporate control of message as they could get away with.
In this model, there developed a situation in which dissenters could work with various levels of awareness of how much they could achieve within this tense framework.
But all leeway has disappeared. No more token allowance of community discussions and Town Hall meetings. The rulers have now brutally asserted corporate control of message. The appearance of discussion and meeting has been insultingly packaged as a display of infantile designated protest groups, oxymoronic transgender blather, citizens dourly concerned with blatantly artificial “catastrophes” etc. Even the appearance of opposition is no longer tolerated and only manifests as a vague off-stage murmur of menacing “reactionary” forces.
And the biggest problem is that massive numbers have no idea that this has happened. They gravitate, under pressure, to the sanctioned views with a deep unease that they are being duped but genuinely terrified to admit that the world they knew has gone. The only views they are permitted are precisely those asinine woke mantras used to further the power of the corporate controllers.
In short, the public has effectively been ejected from even an appearance of democratic involvement. But the hope lies in the fact that it is still the case that a totally controlled media would be incapable of fooling anyone. And it only appears to do so right now because it hasn’t happened before in our lifetimes. This new totalitarianism has a “sell by” date. The rulers know this. The public are beginning to realise it. The real question is: What comes next when the illusion no longer fools anyone?

Just heard an archive of a media interview that was several years old. The Maui event was anticipated. It was just a matter of time before it happened. It would have been political suicide to implement the strategies needed to prevent the tragedy which would have involved the displacement of many native Hawaiians. The only roadway out of the neighborhood was perpetually backed up with traffic due to the heavy tourism. And then the climate change narrative kicked in. Heads have rolled already and will continue to roll.

I can’t properly describe how absurd that is, or maybe it’s insane, or maybe it’s stupid, crazy, I don’t know. I think anyone who actually takes that seriously must be dumber than a box of rocks. The authors of those studies are complete idiots, but idiocy seems to reign supreme nowadays. It’s either that, or they’re in on an insidious agenda of misinformation themselves. All things considered, I wouldn’t necessarily vote for the second option, that’s how fucking stupid people have become. We are devolving.
I think of a principle most people would agree should be taught to the young, “question everything”. That goes back to pre-Socrates time. It is a basic human principle. That’s like “trust your gut” in that you shouldn’t believe everything you read or hear and should question things and decide for yourself. Now, this has turned into question everything EXCEPT the government (and the oligarchy’s media), and that, coming from a former hippie, is astounding fifty years after the major anti-establishment period of the sixties. And the number of people agreeing with that, even vociferously or religiously, is amazing. Trust the government, but don’t trust those right wing blogs that don’t trust the government. I wonder how many of those people listen to Pink Floyd’s “Mother should I trust the government” and have a period of complete disassociation from reality. How the hell? I guess it’s just the way it’s always been, except now, it’s worse.

Anti-authoritarians question whether an authority is a legitimate one before taking that authority seriously. Evaluating the legitimacy of authorities includes assessing whether or not authorities actually know what they are talking about, are honest, and care about those people who are respecting their authority. And when anti-authoritarians assess an authority to be illegitimate, they challenge and resist that authority—sometimes aggressively and sometimes passive-aggressively, sometimes wisely and sometimes not.
